I have since written articles for all o the ground forces maps in the game and have started progress on the air forces maps. ==About Me==
 +
I joined the War Thunder in December 2013 and have been playing it ever since. I have been a member of the Tanks and Ships CBT. When War Thunder Live launched I joined in from the start and have been a regular contributor, posting User Missions, the occasional skin, and anything else I feel like.
 +
 +
I also started messing around with the War Thunder CDK when it was launched. Over the years I have become very experienced with the mission editor, releasing many missions on WT Live, as well as making many missions to be released with user made vehicles, by _Beckett and Snozzeltoff, and a few to be used in various YouTube videos. Along with other CDK users I was invited to partake in the closed testing of Multiplayer User Missions, before their public release.
 +
 +
My main (WT related) interests are British aircraft and tanks.

Me and the Wiki
 +
 +
I am reasonably new to the Wiki (joined December 2017). I have managed to update and add a lot of information to the article for every ground forces maps in the game (as of 1.77), most of which were almost completely empty. I have also updated some of the CDK pages and written a page on how to make CSV files for missions. In the future I plan to look at making further improvements to the missions and maps section and expand / improve the CDK related pages.
 +
 +
I am currently writing articles for all the air forces maps in game, and updating the relative section of the missions and maps page to match the ground forces maps section, in the process. Take a look below to see what it will look like when finished.

List of all tank sight magnifications
<!---->
+
To save on the guessing here's a list of the default and zoomed in gunner's sight magnifications for every tank in the game. Use the value displayed in game as a primary source (for consistency), but for most vehicles where the zoom value isn't listed this list should be accurate.

<div class="ttx">
+
This is a programmatically generated list, it seems to be accurate from my own testing, but do some sanity checking with it first. The zoom numbers are rounded to 2 d.p. in the list. When filling in pages it might be best to round the numbers to the nearest 0.05 to keep it a bit cleaner and inline with the values shown in game. There are some minor differences between the numbers in here and those in game (out by a few decimals sometimes), but for the most part they are accurate and it may well be the game displaying a clean number instead of a number closer to the actual value.

Overview
+
Tank sight zooms
Fulda Gap, or simply Fulda, is a ground forces map available in all modes. It was added in Update 1.71 “New E.R.A.”, as a suitable map for the more modern Rank 6 vehicles added in the patch. Fulda is one of the few maps set after WW2, the others (as of Update 1.75) being Korea / 38th Parallel, Middle East and Sinai. As the name suggests it is set in the Fulda Gap,  an area on the border of East and West Germany, during the Cold War. The map is noticeably modern with large radio communication towers, wind turbines, and modern looking roads, with electric street lights.

{| class="wikitable sortable"

|-
Fulda is large compared to many of the other maps in game, with nearly all of the full ground forces map (seen on the right) playable. The open nature of the map lends itself to long range engagements, however close quarters brawling can still take place in areas such as the around the castle, and in the barracks / military depot areas, in various locations around the map. In Realistic Battles players must always be alert as players can quite easily snipe them from long range. Trees lines and hills can be used to provide some cover, but an unaware player can easily leave themselves open to enemy fire. The map also contains a number of static M60A1 Patton and T-62 tanks; usually located at road blocks, on the border, and in the military areas. Players need to be wary of these tanks as they provide the opportunity for enemies to park up and hide, blending in the parked tanks; they may also trick players into firing, giving away their position. These tanks are all M60A1s or T-62s, always have the turret pointing straight forwards (and gun level to the tank), and are map assets so never move; if you see an enemy tank that does not meet these requirements, then they are almost certainly an player, and should be engaged (assuming they are not on your team of course).

The border between East and West Germany (the dotted line on the map to the right) runs roughly diagonal across the map, starting just east of the Southwest corner, and running to just west of the Northwest corner. in the Northwest of the map there is an American barracks, made up of a few wooden buildings and number of tents; with a number of static M60A1 Tanks parked in lines. East and slightly south of this there is another set of barracks, this time based in a small village (with a couple of damaged / destroyed houses; there are no static tanks at this location. East of this, and right on the border there is an American military base. There are a number few static M60A1s parked up at various locations around the base. Trees and bushes can provide cover for those trying to approach the base.

Southeast of the base, on the East Germany side of the border there is a castle. This area provides a good spot for some short range brawling. Trees and the hilly terrain can provide cover to those approaching the castle. once at the castle it provides a good place to shoot down on people at the radio station to the southeast. Southeast of the castle, in a natural depression, there is a military radio communication station with large radio masts and a large number of static T62 tanks. Where main roads cross the border there are roadblocks, usually accompanied by static tanks.

Game Description
Historical Background
<!--Describe historical context of the location.-->

The map is set in the Fulda Gap, a region on the West / East Germany border which NATO identified as one of the two most likely areas that Soviet armored would advance through, in the event of a surprise attack on the west. It offered a passage through the rugged hills of southern Germany. The concept of a major tank battle along the Fulda Gap was a major element of NATO war planning during the Cold War. The United States maintained approximately 250,000 troops in West Germany during the Cold War, with the Majority located in the South, towards the Fulda Gap. A series of weapons, including various forms of nuclear artillery, man portable nuclear weapons, the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter and A-10 ground attack aircraft were developed with war along the German border in mind. With the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989 and the reunification of Germany in 1990 the Fulda Gap lost its strategic importance.

The general area in the air battle map is reasonably accurate, however the specific layout of the tank battles map seems to be to fictional (albeit clearly inspired by the real area).

The naming of AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles can be a little confusing due to the development of the missile being split between the United States Navy (USN) and United States Air Force (USAF). This means that missiles with later letters can have inferior performance compared to those with earlier letters (e.g. the AIM-9D is better than the AIM-9E), and the predecessor of a missile is not always what you would logically assume (e.g. the AIM-9G is developed from the AIM-9D, not the AIM-9E of AIM-9F).

+
The "family tree" of AIM-9 Sidewinder can be seen below. The development of the Sidewinder was started by the USN at the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake in 1950. The first missile firing occurred in 1951 and the first air-to-air hit on a target drone was achieved on on 11 September 1953. The first missiles began low-rate production in 1955, designated Sidewinder 1 (later known as the AIM-9A), and were used for test and evaluation. Various improvements were made leading the first full production version designated Sidewinder 1A (later known as the AIM-9B), which entered production in 1956.

 +
The AIM-9 Sidewinder was originally only used by the USN with the USAF using their own air-to-air missile, the AIM-4 Falcon. The performance of the AIM-4 proved disappointing during combat in South East Asia, and so the USAF decided to adopt the AIM-9B alongside the USN. This is where the family tree splits; the USN conducted major upgrades to the AIM-9B resulting in the AIM-9C and AIM-9D; while later on the USAF conducted their own, more limited, upgrades resulting in the AIM-9E. The USN and USAF sidewinders continued to be developed separately until both forces came together to make the AIM-9L and its successors, the AIM-9M and AIM-9X.

About Me
+
AIM-9A (not in game)
I joined the War Thunder in December 2013 and have been playing it ever since. I have been a member of the Tanks and Ships CBT. When War Thunder Live launched I joined in from the start and have been a regular contributor, posting User Missions, the occasional skin, and anything else I feel like.
+
Originally known as the AAM-N-7 Sidewinder I, the AIM-9A was the first version of the Sidewinder missile, low rate production of which began in 1955. Only 240 AIM-9As were produced, they did not see active service, instead being used for test / evaluation purposes. The name AIM-9A is seemingly often used as a blanket term covering the 240 AAM-N-7 Sidewinder I missiles, along with the various XAAM-N-7 prototypes.

My main (WT related) interests are British aircraft and tanks.

Me and the Wiki
I am reasonably new to the Wiki (joined December 2017). I have managed to update and add a lot of information to the article for every ground forces maps in the game (as of 1.77), most of which were almost completely empty. I have also updated some of the CDK pages and written a page on how to make CSV files for missions. In the future I plan to look at making further improvements to the missions and maps section and expand / improve the CDK related pages.

I am currently writing articles for all the air forces maps in game, and updating the relative section of the missions and maps page to match the ground forces maps section, in the process. Take a look below to see what it will look like when finished.

Latest revision as of 09:35, 6 June 2023

Seeing as the old wiki is no more, looks like I need a new user page.

About Me

I've been playing War Thunder fairly continuously since December 2013 (Update 1.37). When War Thunder Live launched in April 2014, I joined up on launch day and have been a fairly active community member since (although not so much recently). April 2014 also saw the Launch of the War Thunder CDK, I picked up the CDK shortly after launch and have since become very experienced with the mission editor. I have released plenty of missions on my WT Live page and have also made missions in support of custom vehicles released by other community members, and some videos from WT YouTubers. When multiplayer user missions were being developed I was among other members of the CDK community selected to partake in closed testing.

Me and the Wiki

I started editing the wiki in December 2017 with the aim of improving the (at the time) almost completly barren Maps and Missions section. I have since written articles for all o the ground forces maps in the game and have started progress on the air forces maps. I have also used my knowledge of the CDK to help improve the (at times lacking) documentation covering it on the wiki.

My Testing Area

Pulling BR of a vehicle from the game

A little proof of concept here: the BR of the Wirraway is being pulled from wherever the sidebar info is from and displayed in an article.

The BR of a Wirraway is 1.3(AB), 1.3(RB), 1.3(SB).

List of all tank sight magnifications

To save on the guessing here's a list of the default and zoomed in gunner's sight magnifications for every tank in the game. Use the value displayed in game as a primary source (for consistency), but for most vehicles where the zoom value isn't listed this list should be accurate.

Tanks are grouped by nation in this order: China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK, USSR, US

Stuff

The AIM-9 Sidewinder is an American family of short range air-to-air missiles. The term AIM-9 Sidewinder may refer to any of the following missiles in game:

American missiles
Foreign versions

AIM-9 Sidewinder family tree

The naming of AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles can be a little confusing due to the development of the missile being split between the United States Navy (USN) and United States Air Force (USAF). This means that missiles with later letters can have inferior performance compared to those with earlier letters (e.g. the AIM-9D is better than the AIM-9E), and the predecessor of a missile is not always what you would logically assume (e.g. the AIM-9G is developed from the AIM-9D, not the AIM-9E of AIM-9F).
