This page is about the American air-to-ground missile AGM-114K Hellfire II. For the other version, see AGM-114B Hellfire.

Description

The AGM-114K Hellfire II missile

The AGM-114K Hellfire II is an American laser-guided air-to-ground missile. It was introduced in Update 1.97 "Viking Fury".

The AGM-114 Hellfire started testing in 1974, with the A model starting in 1982, B in 1984, and the AGM-114k Hellfire II in 1993. The first non-US Hellfire was sold to France in August 2005 to be used on the Euro Tiger ARH and the Tiger HAD in 2012. The AGM-114K Hellfire II is the US Navy version which is a copy of the AGM-114J with the addition of a SAD system, but ended up being adopted by the USAF as well as the Navy. The improvements of the AGM-114k over the J model, (which was an improvement of the F model) was lightened construction to increase the range that was lost with the F model's improved guidance system's increased weight, as well as the SAD system's own extra weight.

Usage in battles

Describe situations when you would utilise this missile in-game (vehicle, pillbox, base, etc)

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Great against all armoured targets
  • High warhead explosive mass, almost reaching 10kg (9.43kg TNT eq.)
  • Increased tandem warhead penetration compared to its predecessor

Cons:

  • Lofting and the quick motor burn time results in slow missile speeds at longer ranges
  • Has a blind spot close-up due to the lofting nature of the ATGMs

History

Examine the history of the creation and combat usage of the weapon in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the weapon and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Weapon-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />.
