Description

The 9M114 missile (the launch tube, missile with first stage motor, and deployed missile are shown; scale is approximate)
The 9M120 missile (the launch tube, missile with first stage motor, and deployed missile are shown; scale is approximate)

The 9M114 Shturm is a Soviet SACLOS-guided anti-tank guided missile. It was introduced in Update 1.81 "The Valkyries".

The 9M114 "Shturm" complex is a versatile missile system designed to be mounted on ground vehicles and helicopters. Its physical appearance is distinctive, with a relatively skinny 130 mm diameter, small fins at the rear, and a 1.625 meter length that makes it look more like a rocket than an ATGM, especially while still loaded in its canister. Although the 9M114 family can't exactly boast overwhelming firepower, particularly the basic "Kokon" model available to helicopters in War Thunder, all members are surprisingly quick in flight and have good effective ranges.

This information is relevant to the basic 9M114 "Kokon" variant used by Soviet helicopters. For the additional variants used by the Shturm-S ground vehicle, see 9M114 Shturm/Ammunition.

Effective damage

The basic 9M114 has rather underwhelming firepower. 560 mm of flat penetration is actually somewhat lower than the 9M17M Falanga the Shturm was designed to replace and significantly inferior compared to the TOW-2 and HOT-2 used by contemporary NATO helicopters. 3.93 kg of TNT equivalent is not bad and enough to knock out light targets with overpressure. It is generally not effective against composite or reactive armour.

Comparison with analogues

  • BGM-71D TOW-2 - the TOW-2 has much better penetration, a higher TNT equivalent, and even IRCCM, making it a much deadlier missile. However it has a slower flight speed and a range of less than 4 kilometers.
  • HOT-2 - the HOT-2's 900 mm of penetration makes the 9M114 seem like a firecracker, however like the TOW it also has a shorter range. The HOT also suffers from an especially poor flight speed of 250 m/s.
  • HJ-8C - the HJ-8C is plainly inferior to the Shturm in almost all categories, having a very disappointing 3 km range and an even slower flight speed than the HOT-2. Where it outshines the Shturm is its tandem warhead - although it might have problems against some types of composite armour at 590 mm of penetration, it has no problem with ERA.

Usage in battles

The basic 9M114 can be counted on to provide a fast and long, if not very powerful punch. On helicopters, it's best used to take out priority targets like SPAA vehicles from a safe distance first. After creeping closer to the battlefield, it's easier to target weak points or switch to more powerful ordnance like heavy unguided rockets.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Great flight speed
  • Better range than comparable missiles
  • Responsive to control inputs, easy to steer

Cons:

  • Relatively weak warhead, easily stopped by composite or reactive armour

History

Examine the history of the creation and combat usage of the weapon in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the weapon and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Weapon-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />.

Media

Excellent additions to the article would be video guides, screenshots from the game, and photos.
