Description
The Shafrir is an Israeli Infrared homing air-to-air missile, it was introduced in Update 1.87 "Locked On", along with the Vautour IIA IDF/AF (the only aircraft currently equipped with it). The design of the missile was based upon that of the AIM-9B and it performs similarly to it in game.
Vehicles equipped with this weapon
General info
Tell us about the tactical and technical characteristics of the missile.
Effective damage
Describe the type of damage produced by this type of missile (high explosive, splash damage, etc)
Comparison with analogues
Give a comparative description of missiles that have firepower equal to this weapon.
Usage in battles
Describe situations when you would utilise this missile in-game (vehicle, pillbox, base, etc)
Found in-game on the Premium Vautour IIA IDF/AF, they can be used to turn the bomber into a pseudo heavy fighter/interceptor, while mounted no other secondary armament can be loaded (i.e. bombs and rockets). They are best used at the start of the game when you have more energy than the enemy who has just taken off, best used when the enemy does not know you are behind them. If you have used AIM-9Bs you will get used to these lovely missiles quickly.
Pros and cons
Summarise and briefly evaluate the weaponry in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark pros and cons as a list.
Pros:
- Reliable at close to medium range
Cons:
- Loses tracking easily
History
Examine the history of the creation and combat usage of the weapon in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the weapon and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Weapon-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main
template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>
, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />
.
The Shafrir-1 was developed in 1959–1964 to fulfill IAF's requirement for a domestic air-to-air missile. It was intended to build the domestic defense industry's abilities, and reduce reliance on foreign imports. The fear of foreign dependence was later proven when France banned arms export to Israel.
The Shafrir-1 was intended for use on French-built Mirage jets. The first testing took place in France in 1963. However the missile's performance was underwhelming enough that they immediately started on the next improved version, the Shafrir-2.
Media
An excellent addition to the article would be a video guide, as well as screenshots from the game and photos.
