General info

Effective damage

The AAM 9M311 is a 90mm semi-automatic surface-to-air missile containing 4.63kg of explosive equivalent of TNT. After detonation the missile behives as an HE projectile sending debris over the target. For doing so it has a proximity fuse of 5m with an armig distance of 300m. With a travelling speed of 910m/s it is capable of destroyng any air target.

Comparison with anaIogues

In terms of tactical usage the AAM 9M311 is limited to anti-aricraft warfare similarly to the Roland 1 and the FlaRakPz 1 due to his HE capabilitiy.

Usage in battles

The AAM 9M311 will have little trouble destroing enemy aircrafts or helicopters due to his speed and fireing range (8km).

Althought it can be fired on tanks, the missile will not be very affective against them but in most cases the explosion will destroy the gun barrel or the traks. The only way to destroy an MBT is to land the missile on the top of the tank so the explosion can pierce the thin top armor. The missile is very effective against lightly armoured targets such as other AAA vehicles or IFV's.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Good speed
  • Good range

Cons:

  • Poor anti-tank capabilities

History

The immediate operational imperative for the PVO-SV was to defeat the then new A-10A Thunderbolt, and US Army helicopters firing anti-armour missiles, such as the TOW equipped AH-1S and Hellfire equipped AH-64A Apache. From the Soviet perspective, both of these threats would pop up briefly above the radar/visual horizon, fire at Soviet tanks or SPAAGs, and then disappear below the horizon. This drove the design requirements for the Tunguska, and led to the development of the high speed 9M311 SAM, intended to cross the distance between the Tunguska and the target before the latter could hide.
