The 530 missile development program began in the mid-1950s and progressed from the original R530 to the Super 530 D, via the Super 530 F. The R530 is based on the experience acquired by Matra (now MBDA) with the development of the infrared guided missile R510 and the semi-active radar guided missile R511 requiring the lighting of the target throughout the flight of the missile. These being used by the Vautour and Mirage III C  of the French Air Force, and the Aquilon of naval aviation. The R530 has been designed to have interchangeable search heads: one with semi-active radar guidance for medium range and one with infrared guidance for use at short range. The R530 entered service in the French Air Force and Naval Aviation in 1963 and its production lasted until the end of the 1970s. It was tested in April 1964 at China Lake in California on an F-8E of the US Navy. Tests resumed on June 26, 1964 with the first F-8E (FN) series aircraft intended for the French navy, characterized by a nose pole for carrying out measurements. Following reliability problems (failure rate of 65% in 1980), it was abandoned in 1991.

The Israelis had bought a very limited number of R530s to arm their Mirage III J. They fired them from 1965 against Mig 17 or 19, during frequent air combat on their borders. The result was often a failure, because the firing conditions were "out of range": the interceptions were made at sight and at short distance which led to a program for the improvement of the missile.

The design of the Super 530 F began in 1968, in response to a tender for an air-to-air missile capable of intercepting bombers at high speed and at high altitude. In 1970, the development contract for the Super 530 to equip the Mirage F1 was notified to Matra and large-scale development began in 1971, followed by bench tests in the same year and flight tests by Dassault Électronique AD26 semi-active research head in 1972. The first firing of a controlled missile took place in 1973 and the first two fully guided fires took place in 1974. The first firing from a Mirage F1 was completed in 1976 and ended testing. The production contract was signed at the end of 1977. The Super 530 F entered service with the French Air Force in 1980 and the first shot from a Mirage 2000 took place in 1981 The Super 530 F could be mounted on different platforms such as the Mirage F1 C and the Mirage 2000 equipped with multimode Doppler radar.

The third missile in the family, the Super 530 D (D for Doppler) was developed to allow the interception of aircraft flying at low altitude and was equipped with a search head with semi-active radar guidance on continuous Doppler pulse (Continuous Wave (CW) Doppler). The development of the Super 530 D began in 1979 in response to a request from the French Air Force to equip the Mirage 2000 RDI (X-band pulse Doppler radar), it cost 1.3 billion French francs. The Super 530 D shots guided by RDI radar took place in 1984 and the system was fully operational in 1987. About a thousand were built, including 590 for France3. On March 1, 2012, the last Super 530D of the French Air Force was fired.

Usage in battles

Unlike most IR guided missiles, the R530E excels at medium range engagements rather than shorter ranges. Due to the slow acceleration but high top speed of the missile, the ideal engagement range is somewhere between 2.5 and 4.5 kilometers, with a maximum range of roughly 7 kilometers at higher altitudes. The seeker has a very wide field of view and can lock on to afterburning targets from about 7 kilometers from a rear aspect, and 4 kilometers from a side aspect.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Long range, at higher altitudes it is possible to hit targets up to 7 kilometers away
  • Hard to dodge when fired strategically
  • Wide seeker angle, can be slaved onto the radar

Cons:

  • Slow acceleration makes the missile easy to dodge at shorter ranges

History

Examine the history of the creation and combat usage of the weapon in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the weapon and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Weapon-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />.
