The name is a rank rank Swedish jet fighter Battle-rating. It was introduced in Update 1.95 "Northern Wind".

The J28B is an early war jet known as the Vampire FB 5 in the British tech tree. It was ordered in large numbers by the Swedish air force to leap into the jet age. The Vampire family is known for its great dogfighting capabilities, meaning the J28B can comfortably fend off several opponents at once if controlled by a skillful pilot. This aerial performance is given at the cost of engine power.

The name is a rank rank German fighter Battle-rating. It was introduced in Update 1.53 "Firestorm". The differences from its predecessor are little in quantity, though they have a drastic effect in-game. The E-4 is slightly heavier, but thanks to better surface polishing and a +150 hp WEP, it is faster than the E-3. The greatest advantage though is the installment of Mg FF/M cannons with minengeschoße.
 +

 +
After having played both the E-1 and E-3, players will rejoice upon unlocking the E-4. While essentially the same plane, the E-4 overcomes the inadequate MG FF with MG FF/M, featuring the fantastic minengeschoße. With two wing-mounted MG FF/Ms with 60 rounds each, the plane has an even more deadly punch, attributed solely to the new thin-walled 20 mm HE shells. Fighting in the E-4 is essentially the same as with all E-frame 109s.
 +

 +
Remaining a great energy fighter against its historical opposition, the E-4 is somewhat troubled by the fact that it often faces mid-to-later-war planes such as the P-47D. To engage these, make sure you have a clear energy advantage; if attacked, fly defensively and attempt to bleed the enemy’s speed while pulling them down. The Bf 109 E-4 is often regarded as a poor turner, a reputation coming from the fact that its main rival, the Spitfire, simply did it better. However, with combat flaps, the E-4 is a respectable turner able to out-turn most planes that outperform it in other ways. However, keep in mind that one of the changes from E-3 to E-4 increased the frame's weight. Flat turning should only be reserved for extreme situations.

<!--Describe how the aircraft behaves in the air. Speed, manoeuvrability, acceleration and allowable loads - these are the most important characteristics of the vehicle.-->
The J28B performs well at low altitude where it easily outturns most opponents it faces. Thanks to the excellent flaps and air brakes, a pilot aware of his/her energy can fend off anyone that picks a fight. The flaps can be utilised at various speeds to outturn any enemy at any time. Dogfights are where the Vampire platform shines, it is a highly effective fighter with its relatively light airframe and smooth controls. Although the power is lacklustre, a pilot aware of his/her surroundings will have no difficulty avoiding incoming enemies. This lack of engine power will, however, cripple the J28B when it comes to acceleration. A Vampire tends to lose a lot of speed when engaged in turning. So gaining it back to defend itself against new opponents becomes a hassle. And even if a J28B pilot manages to get their speed up, catching a target will be close to impossible with a slow top speed. This lack of power hinders the J28B in many ways, mostly related to energy. This is why "Vamp" pilots are advised to climb at the beginning of a match, despite the lack of a decent climb rate.
+
The DB 601N provides its maximum performance around 2,000 m to 5,000 m (6,500 ft to 16,500 ft respectively) and comes with WEP, providing +150 hp upon activation. The boost will last about one minute from a cooled engine.

The J28B performs identically to the Vampire FB 5 which should not come as a surprise. The firepower is what makes them different, however. The J28B is outfitted with the Swedish Akan m/47B (short for "Automatkanon"), which is the Swedish designation of the British Hispano Mk.V, although the calibre and fire rate are the same, the burst mass is larger. This has to do with the Swedish ammunition. The Swedish ammo type contains more TNT and is fully tracer equipped, meaning stealth isn't an option. Despite this downside, the guns perform closer to the American AN/M3 guns instead of the British Hispanos, making the J28B the most effective Vampire in regards to firepower. The J28B is also outfitted with several types of anti-tank and anti-ship rockets. Despite lacking the large 1,000 lb bombs the FB 5 offers, the rockets offer a much different experience compared to the original model. The rockets fire one at a time held on by a Swedish rocket rack, pointing them further down than usual. The average pilot, especially the ones coming from the FB 5, will find this new placement tricky to get used to. But considering the single fire system, a skilled pilot might be able to rack up more destroyed tanks in ground battles compared to the FB 5. If this becomes too sufferable, however, it is recommended to use "Fire rocket salvo" instead to fire off two rockets at once, for a more traditional feel. It's not worth sacrificing accuracy for efficiency when it comes to rockets.

When engaging the Bf 109 E-4, doing so in a group is your best bet. While it can easily pick off one or two planes, it doesn’t have very much cannon ammo and will be easily overwhelmed when engaged by multiple foes. In a one-on-one engagement, try to trick the pilot into bleeding their energy. While the Bf 109 E-4 will outrun most planes at its rank, it can also be outgunned by them. Once it uses all its cannon ammo, it's only left with two machine guns, which most planes take little to no damage from at a glance.
The J28B has the same armour as the Vampire FB 5 as well as the Italian Vampire FB 52A. Despite being dangerous in a head-on due to the beefed-up guns, a J28B should never fully commit to a head-on engagement, the bulletproof glass will, however, save the pilot most of the time. The tail section is not easily saved though. The twin-boom makes it twice as likely to hit the traction of control surfaces. This leaves the J28B completely useless usually resulting in abandonment of the aircraft, which should be avoided at all costs.

* 4 x 20 mm Akan m/47B cannons, chin-mounted (150 rpg = 600 total)

* 2 x 20 mm MG FF/M cannon, wing-mounted (60 rpg = 120 total)

The two canons are mounted with one in each wing whereas the two machine guns are mounted in the upper fuselage just in front of the cockpit.

The main armament is identical to that of the Bf 109 E-3. However, there is one critical difference. The MG FF/M can fire minengeschoße shells. Minengeschoße's shell is very thin, allowing more incendiary material to be used; however, these very same characteristics prevent them from being fired from older MG FF versions (like on the predecessor E-3). Thus, the MG FF/Ms are far more powerful than the MG FFs.

Unless you like to fly at a severe disadvantage, do not use the bombs unless you have to in order to win a match, for example after refuelling/restocking at the base. The bomb load is nowhere near large enough to make a fighter bombing trip worth it.

A J28B pilot should always be aware of his/her speed and altitude, or energy in more advanced terms. To avoid enemies with superior engine power using it as a boom and zoom target, a J28B pilot should use altitude to their advantage. Since the Vampire platform is bad at building up energy, the pilot should store as much energy as possible for when the battle begins. Before engaging targets, it can also be useful to always keep a speed of at least 400 km/h to limit the number of options an enemy has to counterattack. This also helps the J28B to swiftly turn around and begin a dogfight if the opponent commits to one. This playstyle can be applied to every Vampire plane in the game since they perform mostly the same. The J28B has to watch out for Ho 229 V3 players, however, since they can outmatch the J28B in turning. A good way to counter the Horten is to make it bleed speed. Forcing it to turn once or twice and then extending away from the enemy.
+

A playstyle close to that of a propeller-driven aircraft can be applied, where energy is the key to survival. The J28B has quite the firepower compared to the other Vampire models. This can reward players who can safely head-on from a distance and then avoid incoming shots from the enemy. This will usually result in a critical hit or straight-up destruction if the enemy doesn't also avoid. The fired rounds are quite deadly and require less gun-time compared to the British counterpart. This gives the J28B an overall higher chance of surviving since it can afford to spend less time on each target. A pilot comfortable with their aim will easily outsmart opponents and make them think twice before engaging in a future dogfight with a PAGENAME.
+
Just like the Bf 109 E-3, the E-4 is a well versatile fighter, being able to both do hit and run strikes and dogfight enemy planes, even though it's strong point is the hit and run tactic having great energy advantage over most enemies it will face. Having a great climb ability and a decent acceleration making it an enemy to be aware of. There are other German planes that does the hit and run tactic far better than the 109 for example the Fw 190,  the Bf 109 on the other hand is the more versatile fighter. Having a excellent climb ability will give the E-4 the advantage it needs to be able to strike on enemy fighters from above, having a high speed gain in a dive gives the E-4 the ability to easily catch up to enemies. But one con with its speed is that when it gains too much speed it can lock up and be difficult to manouver and pull up. But being able to catch up with enemies is not the only thing the E-4 is good at. It got a average turn but in proper hands the E-4 can be a fearful dogfighter competing with most fighters. Some advantages it got over the Spitfire and Hurricane is the engine, being able to do manouvering without chocking the engine with lack of fuel injections from doing manouvers.

Modules
+
The 109 E-4's strong points is being equipped with 2x MG FF/M compared to the E-3 that uses the MG FF. The MG FF/M lets the E-4 use minengeschoß in its belts having a devastating mine shell is always a benefit to have in its arsenal. Though having the devastating minengeschoß shells its lack of ammunition in the MG FF/M with only 60 rounds each makes it limited with how many shells and the cannons should be used with care when they got a clear shot on the hostile plane. Not only being armed with cannons the E-4 also comes equipped with 2x MG 17 that holds 1000 rounds each and can be a leading guide for the 20mm cannons. Though should not take the small caliber MG 17 for granted. They can also tear enemies at the BR with ease, having a fast rate of fire means it can put alot of bullets into the enemy plane in short amount of time and that is a excellent thing since greater chance to hit vital areas of the target. Preferance is to use the machine guns and cannons together for a devastating effect on the target but they can be used seperatly for a good effect still.
 +

 +
Enemies to be wary of are mostly turn fighters like Spitfire and I-16 since they can out turn the E-4 with ease. Also take note of hit and run planes like P-38E and La-5 since they might not have the greatest climb ability they can still be formidable opponents when it comes to hit and run attacks.

The Swedish air force carefully studied what was happening at the Fronts in WWII, and by 1944 it was already obvious that the propeller era was coming to a close. By early 1945, the Swedes had already begun a project to power the Saab J21 with a ramjet. However, it seemed this project would take far too long. By autumn of 1945, the J29 project was also beginning to take shape. But even this project wouldn't take to the skies until 1949, so a foreign design had to do until then.

The Bf 109 E-4 was the replacement of the older E-3 version that was used in Battle of Britain, the E-4 got upgraded with new 20mm MG FF/M's and better protection for the pilot. Upgraded with the 20mm MG FF/M made the E-4 unlike the E-3 being able to use the Minengeschoß shells. Just like the E-3 the E-4 had an extensive use in the battle of britain facing formidable opponent's like the Spitfire and Hurricane. Entering production in 1940 being based on its predecessor the E-3 most of them got converted later into the E-4.

The British de Havilland Vampire was one of the first jet-powered fighter planes to enter the market, and Sweden was very interested in this design. In early 1946, Sweden ordered 70 Vampire F Mk 1 models designated J28A, thus becoming one of the first customers of the Vampire. This version was mostly used as practice for the new era of jet-driven aircraft. But the Swedes became fond of the design. So when the export version of the Vampire FB 5 entered the market known as the Mk 50, Sweden was very interested and orders started in 1949. This version was to be known as the J28B or A28B depending on suspended armaments. This version differed from the Mk 1 by having a renewed, rounder tail section, and a lower placed elevator. The engine was upgraded from the RM1 to the RM1A that was now produced by SFA (Svenska flygmotor AB) in Sweden and delivered to de Havilland in Britain for installation. The main armament was also changed from the Hispano Mk II to the more potent Hispano Mk V. By 1952, 310 J28B Vampires had been delivered to Sweden. 12 of these would be rebuilt as a two-seat trainer, known as the J28C-3.

Description

GarageImage Bf 109 E-4.jpg

The Bf 109 E-4 is a rank II German fighter with a battle rating of 3.0 (AB/RB/SB).

General info

Flight Performance

The DB 601N provides its maximum performance around 2,000 m to 5,000 m (6,500 ft to 16,500 ft respectively) and comes with WEP, providing +150 hp upon activation. The boost will last about one minute from a cooled engine.

Survivability and armour

 • 10 mm Steel plate behind seat
 • 10 mm Steel plate headrest
 • No armour glazing
 • Critical components located in front of aircraft (fuel, pilot, engine, controls)

While the armour is quite limited on the Bf 109 E-4 as in other fighter aircraft, the Bf 109 E-4 compensates with its other flight performances.

Armaments

Offensive armament

The Bf 109 E-4 is armed with:

 • 2 x 20 mm MG FF/M cannon, wing-mounted (60 rpg = 120 total)
 • 2 x 7.92 mm MG 17 machine gun, nose-mounted (1,000 rpg = 2,000 total)

The two canons are mounted with one in each wing whereas the two machine guns are mounted in the upper fuselage just in front of the cockpit.

The main armament is identical to that of the Bf 109 E-3. However, there is one critical difference. The MG FF/M can fire minengeschoße shells. Minengeschoße's shell is very thin, allowing more incendiary material to be used; however, these very same characteristics prevent them from being fired from older MG FF versions (like on the predecessor E-3). Thus, the MG FF/Ms are far more powerful than the MG FFs.

Suspended armament

The Bf 109 E-4 can be outfitted with the following ordinance:

 • Without load
 • 4 x 50 kg SC50JA bombs (200 kg total)
 • 1 x 250 kg SC250JA bomb (250 kg total)

The E-4 can load either 4 x 50 kg or 1 x 250 kg bombs. Unless you like to fly at a severe disadvantage, do not use the bombs unless you have to in order to win a match, for example after refuelling/restocking at the base. The bomb load is nowhere near large enough to make a fighter bombing trip worth it.

Usage in battles
