Description
By the Vietnam War, the AD Skyraiders had an extensive combat record with the USA since the Korean War. Seven major variants of the aircraft was produced, numbered AD-1 to AD-7. As part of the 1962 Tri-service designation system, the Skyraider was redesigned into "A-1", with letters A-J to represent each variant. The AD-6, now known as the A-1H, would be the most numerous produced at 712 units and would serve as an essential ground support aircraft for the US throughout the Vietnam War. The A-1H's had one of its most memorable moment come in October 1965 when Commander Clarence J. Stoddard of the US Navy, to commemorate the 6 millionth pound of ordnance dropped, included a mounted toilet in his munitions load and dropped it in combat operations.
The A-1H Skyraider, introduced in Update "Fire and Ice" as a reward for Battle Pass: Season IX, "Smell of Victory", has a familiar feel to the preceding Skyraider variants present in the game. However, the amount of ordnance the A-1H can carry compared to its predecessor is on another level. This can allow the A-1H to lay havoc to any target it finds in the field. The large number of hard points on the aircraft and the ordnance variety means the aircraft can be suited up with ordnance that is best suited to the battlefield conditions. If up to it, players can reenact Commander Stoddard's claim to fame in 1965 and equip the "Special Weapon" to the aircraft and drop that into the battlefield.

Usage in battles
The A-1H can perform well in battles at its BR, either in a CAS role with 30 x 250 lb bomb capacity, 228 x FFAR rockets and 11 x Mk 77 mod 2 incendiary bombs. Once the ordnance is expended, it can also perform decently as a fighter since it has flares, which allows for it to be used in higher tier battles.

Pros and cons
Pros:
- Huge and varied payload options, including napalms and rockets, as well as retarded bombs
- Access to custom loadout options
- Can mount up to 8 miniguns with plenty of ammunition, capable of destroying any planes with a short burst
- Access to countermeasures, making it an ideal CAS in ground battles
- Four 20 mm cannons are good for ground targets and plane
- Sturdy and armoured enough to tank on machine gun and cannon rounds
Cons:
- Mediocre manoeuvrability that worsens with a payload you carry
- 20 mm cannons and miniguns have different ballistic properties, can make lining up shot somewhat tricky
- Can face jet aircraft that can easily hunt down and destroy the plane
- Mighty Mouse Rockets are ineffective, requiring a direct hit even against SPAA
History
Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the aircraft in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main
template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>
, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />
. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===
, also if applicable).
