Survivability and armour
Examine the survivability of the aircraft. Note how vulnerable the structure is and how secure the pilot is, whether the fuel tanks are armoured, etc. Describe the armour, if there is any, and also mention the vulnerability of other critical aircraft systems.

Usage in battles
Describe the tactics of playing in the aircraft, the features of using aircraft in a team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but instead, give the reader food for thought. Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).
Pros and cons
Summarise and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in the bulleted list. Try not to use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - use substitutions with softer forms such as "inadequate" and "effective".
Pros:
- A potent ground attack aircraft, owing to its wide variety of large air-to-ground payloads
- Has thermal sights in the form of an equippable AN/AAR-45 FLIR pod which significantly assists one in locating ground targets in mixed battles
- Can equip a maximum of six AGM-62 Walleye guided bombs, which are very effective in mixed battles
- Comes with an internal 20mm M61 Vulcan cannon, with the option to add either more 20mm M61 Vulcans or devastating 30mm GAU-13/A cannons
- The 20mm M61 Vulcan rotary cannon rips apart aircraft and can be used effectively against ground targets
- The 30mm GAU-13/A rotary cannon is even more powerful than the Vulcan and produces one of the highest one-second burst masses in the game
- Enemies may not expect the above-average range of the AIM-9D and G air-to-air missiles on the slow A-7E
- Has a radar, allowing you to detect enemies at altitude and slave the AIM-9G’s seeker to a radar lock
- Large amount of countermeasures (120x)
- Cockpit has a heads-up display and tactical map, both of which are useful in simulator battles
Cons:
- For it’s battle rating, it performs very poorly in air combat and therefore is significantly disadvantaged in air game modes
- Being the highest BR subsonic aircraft in the game, it is much, much slower than the top-tier supersonic aircraft it will commonly see
- Below-average maneuverability and loses lots of speed in turns
- With it’s slow speed along with the current lack of airspawn, it becomes very difficult to bomb bases without being intercepted
- Equipping suspended ordinance only worsens its sluggishness
- Lacks the AGM-65 Maverick air-to-ground missiles that the previous A-7D had
- The AN/AAR-45 FLIR pod comes with a few difficulties:
- It sometimes takes the place of ordinance (notably, the pod reduces the maximum amount of Walleyes from 6 to 5)
- It’s thermal sight is not linked to the Walleye’s targeting sight, so in mixed battles you may lose track of the enemy’s location when switching between the sights
- When using it’s thermal sight in mixed battles, it may be hard to distinguish alive enemy tanks from destroyed tanks and fires
- Airbrake does not work with the landing gear down; coupled with the lack of braking parachute, this makes for a long landing distance
- Poor aerial combat abilities, lack of stock countermeasures, high research costs and the Walleye guided bombs being a tier 4 modification makes for an extremely painful stock grind
History
Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the aircraft in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main
template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>
, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />
. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===
, also if applicable).
