Fun facts
- Joined November 2013, play on/off

- Highest number of games: B7A2/C2A1/IJN Yuudachi
- My Player profile in the WT community

- Ranks (only those worth noting): USA: Tanks V, Fleet IV GER: Tanks VIII, Fleet III USSR: Tanks IV, Air III, Fleet IV UK: Tanks III, Air IV JAP: Tanks V, Air V, Fleet VI CHN: Tanks III IT: Tanks III, Air V, Fleet VI FR: Air IV, Fleet V SWE: Tanks: III
Go to the main article to see a table of the gun calibres, how much penetration they have and how large HE fillers.
E.g. 12-ich/305mm guns with the AP shells have 275 - 419 mm penetration and 5.66 - 18.79 kg HE filler, the best one being the B-50.
To be expanded and updated if/when I'll have time.
- See Rowan's guide to war thunder naval
- Naval mode is 60% positioning, 20% lineup, 20% gunnery & miscellaneous
- Positioning
- Know when to disengage. There is no shame in retreating. If you get focused-fired by multiple threatening ships - break contact. Smoke, hard terrain, everything is good. In a large ship it's often best to just hide behind the hill and run aground, as it does next to no damage to self, while stopping you instantly, instead of rolling next kilometer on full reverse trying to bleed speed.
- Lineup
- Airplanes:
Low BR | A ton of options, hard to choose bad, just FYI: equivalent to 800-1000kg bombs are 2000 lb | Any Ju-87 | Su-2/BB-1 | ▄Wirraway into Firebrand TF Mk IV | D4Y or B6N1 for torpedoes | Ba.65 (K.14) L into Ju 87 D-3 or SM.91 | V-156-F into ▄F6F-5 or Potez 631 |
Mid-High BR (Rank III+) | Do-217/Ju-87, for fun: He 111 H-6 with PC 1400 X | Pe-8 (with 4 x FAB-1000) | Sea Fury FB 11 or Wyvern S4 or Lancaster or (lowest BR rank III with TinyTims & 1600lb AP) ▄Hellcat Mk II | B7A2 | SM.92 into ▄P-47D-30 into ◔Tu-2S-59 | ▄AD-4 or ▄F6F-5N into ▄AD-4NA or ▄F8F-1B |
- Nations. Assumes: personal bias/bias of those I trust with opinions plus some numbers, AB, ships are at the top of the lineup (e.g. no judging of BR 6.3 BB vs BR 7.0). Also keep in mind that every such list will be heavily subjective (e.g. how you score a category where most are bad and one is great or how you score a ship that has an amazing guns for the BR, but no AA and bad torpedoes, while also having good armor, yet can get easily deleted with a broadside into a critical spot?)

- ℹ️ Note: USSR does not have any heavy cruisers. French coastal tree isn't released yet.
- ℹ️ Note 2: As of the time of writing French tree ends at 6.7
- ** Scharnhorst is effectively impossible to kill by ammo-racking. It's best countered with the use of HE munitions.
- Gunnery & miscellaneous
- Naval mode is much more like Ground than Air - it's all about killing the crew rather than taking down the vehicle. You can turn that part of a ship into a black hole with all the shell hits, but it won't matter if there is no crew left in the compartments.
- Typically the best way to kill the crew is by destroying the ammo racks, or specifically: blowing up the magazines (note: shell rooms can also explode, but magazines are much more likely to).
- As of Update "Air Superiority" main guns do not cause unrepairable hull breach, making ships that in real life did not have enough buoyancy in the citadel to stay afloat (e.g. Scharnhorst) unusually difficult to sink. While in real life ships typically "died" by sinking, rather than the deaths of crew members, original implementation of this mechanic caused a huge uproar in the community, causing the feature to be removed - currently unrepairable hull breaches can be caused only by the torpedoes with a sufficiently large warhead (the size of the warhead needed to inflict it depends on the thickness of armour at the specific location it hit).
- Destroyers (DD)
- US destroyers typically have a huge magazine in the back, if you'll hit that with AP/SAP - they will blow up in fireworks
- Battleship (BB) / Battlecruiser (BC)
- Majority of them should be used for pushing the caps. Obvious exception being a glass cannons, but these are relatively rare. Role of the BB is first to assert dominance over the area and secondly: soaking up damage. Getting kills is least important for an average BB (and most important for glass cannons)
- Other notes:
- There is no such thing as a "meta shell" in the game. You use different shells for different effects. Unlocking new shell types is not an upgrade, it's opening new options, it's nothing like in Ground or Air forces where unlocked ammunition is almost always better than stock, and the best ammo types are last in the modifications tree. See this image for explanation of the AP vs HE damage, though occasional shrapnel bug out causing more damage with HE than it might appear from this example alone.
- If you look to earn - play bluewater navy in BR 5.0 - there is no place where you can earn more SL per hour than here. Want to level it up to another level? Use USS Moffett in Realistic Battles.
- BR spread is 1.0. This means that if you play USS Mitscher (BR 4.7) you'll be able to see IJN Ikoma (BR 5.7) (As of 2.23). Such matchups are not common, and the matchmaker trying to avoid putting multiple BB players in such low matchups. Either way, don't get discouraged - DDs are CLs are not meant to duel BBs, just avoid getting focused and fight with the other targets. BBs are best dealt with in bombers, as they typically have a pitiful anti-air defence - drop bombs on turrets (→ammo racks). Throwing some torpedoes at them or a bit of HE shells to cause a fire can also be helpful.
A comparsion of the most common aerial bombs used on a strike craft and single-engine bombers below BR 7.0 with a mass ≥ 500 kg or, for bombs with a mass given in pounds: ≥ 500 lb (just to illustrate the point, that the 500 lb is not the same as 500 kg, not even close).

- ↑ 400 kg Vliegtuigbom is the largest native Dutch bomb in the game, thus it was included into the list, even if it's sub-500 kg.
Vessels missing weapons
If you see anything missing from the list - feel free to edit it and add items
- USS Newport News - Zuni Chaffroc system
- USS Dealey - 2 Squid anti-submarine mortar
- USS Douglas - Likely RIM-24A should be replaced by AGM-78, though RIM-24A technically would have fit into the pods

- HMS Hood - 7-inch UP launchers
- HMS Leopard - Squid anti-submarine mortar
- Chikugo - RUR-5 ASROC

- Frunze - Missing 60 mines
- Letuchiy - Missing 40 depth charges and 50 mines
- Kerch - Missing 80 mines
- Kirov (Family) - Missing 50 depth charges and 96-150 mines

Other tips and hints
- How to turn off seasonal hangard? Download the default one from https://live.warthunder.com/post/941994/en/, go to your game folder (%localappdata%\WarThunder), unpack it there, rename hangar.blk to hangar_21.blk, open config.blk with text editor and insert
hangarBlk:t="hangar_21.blk"
after the first block (beforeoculus{
in my file). Now you'll have a permanent copy of a switchable default hangar, if you want to go back to seasonal, just delete thehangarBlk:t="hangar_21.blk"
bit of code. - You can't repositioning your camera in Nvidia Ansel? Restart the game with anti-cheat turned off.
- Go to Options and change "Temperature indication" to "Always" - this will allow you to see how the engine cools down after you decrease the thrust - pretty useful for avoiding IR-guided missiles.
