Description

The BV 155 was one of the many designs Germany developed during World War II for high-altitude performance. It first started life with Messerschmitt, respectively called the Me 155. At this point, the Me 155 was developed to be a carrier fighter aboard the Graf Zeppelin. The Me 155 was developed with the strict goal of using as many parts from the Bf 109 as possible. It still used the DB 605 engine, and the fuselage was from the Bf 109 G variant. However, it had new wings and carrier-specific features like folding wings and an arrestor gear. Due to delays with the Graf Zeppelin, the Me 155 project was put on hold for the indefinite future. Messerschmitt continued to work on the project until the RLM (German Ministry of Aviation) saw numerous deficiencies and moved the work to Blohm & Voss.

When Blohm & Voss took control of the project, they concluded that the original design had far too many problems and a redesign was in order. The BV 155 V1 featured a new laminar flow wing as well as parts from the Ju 87 "Stuka". The canopy was also revised, and bigger radiators were fitted to remedy the cooling issues brought on by high angles of attack. Another prototype, the V2, was also being developed and was largely the same as the V1. It had the DB 603E engine, but it still didn't meet performance expectations. This led to the BV 155 V3, which would be the last 155. During the V2's development, Blohm & Voss proposed that the new DB 603U engine be put in place of the DB 603E. This would provide a substantial power increase thanks to its larger supercharger. The fate of V3 is unknown, but V1 and V2 were sent to the RAF after the war. The V1 was tested until it was written off, but the V2 is currently at the National Air and Space Museum.

The BV 155 B-1 was introduced as a reward vehicle for Battle Pass: Season VIII, "Field Testing" during Update "Danger Zone". The BV 155 performs the best at high altitudes thanks to its wing design and supercharged DB 603. However, the climb rate is quite lacklustre at only 13.8 m/s, so climbing to high altitudes will be difficult. Although the wings help the BV 155 turn tight with enough energy, it significantly hurts the roll rate. Furthermore, the BV 155 has a relatively low structural limit of 730 km/h (453 mph), which many fighters can easily exceed. The vast majority of fights in Air Realistic Battles don't happen at the altitude the BV 155 was designed to operate at, so it's quite limited in its capability.

The BV 155 B-1 has below average energy retention, diving speed and roll rate at altitude below 4.5 km, and it becomes more problematic if you don't have any energy left, making it harder to escape from a enemy with the upper hand or with a higher energy potential than you.

The BV 155 B-1 is armed with:

  • 1 x 30 mm MK 108 cannon, nose-mounted (75 rpg)
  • 2 x 20 mm MG 151 cannons, wing-mounted (200 rpg = 400 total)

Usage in battles

Realistic Battles:

The BV 155 B-1 has some similarity with the playstyle of the Ho 229 V3 and you may get familiar to it, you need to keep in mind that BV 155 needs energy to keep its good performance, but at the same time trying to maintain IAS low due its constant compression at high speeds, it means you have to maintain the altitude and energy all the time to avoid any enemy fighter getting the upper hand on you, which means you will have a hard time escaping from it (even bombers such as SB2C may catch you easily), as you bleed considerably in long dogfights and have below average diving speed, bad straight line acceleration and top speed at most common engagement altitudes (3 km and 5 km). But this plane can be very efficient when you get used to its BnZ and turn rate or bomber hunting capabilities (due its very reliable weaponry) while you don't let anyone dive on you and getting more energy.

Ideally, you should not commit to head-on engagements as your only protection is the 57 mm bulletproof glass of the windshield, which is completely inadequate against fighters equipped with cannons.

Enemy worth mentioning:

Ki-43-III otsu - It may outclimb the BV 155 at the beginning of a match and must be avoided if at higher altitude. This plane can rope-a-dope and outturn you, so proceed with caution.

Spitfires - Some spitfires may not seem a threat as they have a very lower performance at high altitude compared to yours, but as it can make you bleed your energy and after that accelerate to catch your tail, Spitfires need to be treated properly as dangerous enemies. BnZ is recommended and dogfights need to be avoided.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Extremely impressive performance at any altitude if it has energy (can even outturn some turnfighters depending on the circumstance)
  • Has combat flaps to even faster turns
  • Very powerful cannons with effective belts against air targets that can rip apart large bombers
  • Airspawn in RB

Cons:

  • Large wingspan makes you an easy target
  • Lacking of armour makes bomber hunting slightly harder
  • The engine tends to overheat too often if radiator is damaged
  • 2 out of 3 cannons are mounted in wings
  • Compresses past 650 km/h and doesn't have airbrakes
  • Slow and poor flight performance at lower altitudes
  • Outclimbed by most single-engine fighters at its battle rating
  • Awful cockpit visibility

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the aircraft in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===, also if applicable).
