General info
Survivability and armour
The SU-76D has almost no armour to speak of, and can only survive one or two shells before getting knocked out. Because of this, it should be played like a light tank. Also, its roof armour is enough for .50 cal machine guns to penetrate. Luckily it has a relatively low profile so getting hit is a bit harder, and it can sustain small-calibre MG fire.
Armour type:
- Rolled homogeneous armour (hull, casemate)
- Cast homogeneous armour (cupola)
Armour | Front (Slope angle) | Sides | Rear | Roof |
---|---|---|---|---|
Hull | ___ mm | ___ mm Top ___ mm Bottom |
___ mm | ___ - ___ mm |
Turret | ___ - ___ mm Turret front ___ mm Gun mantlet |
___ - ___ mm | ___ - ___ mm | ___ - ___ mm |
Cupola | ___ mm | ___ mm | ___ mm | ___ mm |
Notes:
- Suspension wheels and torsion bars are 10 mm thick while tracks are 15 mm thick.
- Belly armour is 6 mm thick.
- There is a 15 mm internal plate separating the crew compartment from the engine compartment.

- If you pack 16 (+55) shells, it will keep most of the casemate empty of ammo.
Usage in battles
Describe the tactics of playing in the vehicle, the features of using vehicles in the team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view but instead give the reader food for thought. Describe the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).
Pros and cons
Pros:
- Powerful 76.2 mm F-34 cannon against common enemies like Pz.IV C, M5A1, Chi-Ha Kai
- ±13° horizontal gun traverse is good, so the tank doesn't need to constantly adjust its hull to aim
- APCR can effectively penetrate heavier targets like B1 ter and M4A3 (105)
- Has a small profile, harder to be seen and hit
Cons:
- Virtually no armour, can only stop low-caliber gunfire from tanks like Light AA
- -5° gun depression is not enough to fight on slopes
- Low reverse speed won't allow quick retreat
- Substandard engine power results in sluggish mobility on hills and loose surface
History
Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the vehicle in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main
template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>
, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />
. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===
, also if applicable).
