Description
The F-5E Tiger II is a rank VII American jet fighter with a battle rating of 11.3 (AB/SB) and 11.0 (RB). It was introduced in Update "Red Skies". The F-5E is a variation of the supersonic light fighter family of Northrop F-5 aircraft. The F-5 was initially designed as a privately funded project in the late 1950s.
The main design goal of this aircraft was to wrap a small, highly aerodynamic fighter around two compact, high-thrust General Electric J85 afterburning engines. Secondary design goals encompassed keeping the maintenance costs low and promoting overall air performance. The F-5 was cheaper to produce then the F-4 II family of aircraft, making it a great exportable design. Some F-5E models are currently being used by the United States Air Force as trainers. The F-5E was initially known as the F-5A-21, but became the F-5E after Northrop won the International Fighter Aircraft competition to replace the F-5A in 1970. The first F-5E flew on the eleventh of August, 2972. The aircraft would soon take the surname Tiger II, and a total of 792 F-5E aircraft were produced by Northrop. 91 were produced in Switzerland, 308 in Taiwan, and 68 by Korean Air (yes, that Korean Air!).

Survivability and armour
Examine the survivability of the aircraft. Note how vulnerable the structure is and how secure the pilot is, whether the fuel tanks are armoured, etc. Describe the armour, if there is any, and also mention the vulnerability of other critical aircraft systems.

Usage in battles
Describe the tactics of playing in the aircraft, the features of using aircraft in a team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but instead, give the reader food for thought. Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).
Pros and cons
Pros:
- Great maneuverability.
- An almost overwhelming selection of air-to-ground armaments, including Bullpup and Maverick air-to-ground missiles.
- Generous ammunition capacity for guns.
Cons:
- Low top speed
- Can only carry a maximum of two air-to-air missiles
History
Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the aircraft in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main
template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>
, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />
. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===
, also if applicable).
Media
Excellent additions to the article would be video guides, screenshots from the game, and photos.
