The Object 478B, officially known as the'''{{Specs|name}}''' and nicknamed "'''Bereza"''' (lit. White Birch), is the conventional diesel engine-powered variant of the T-80U series in late-1980s. To replace the fuel-hungry and expensive Klimov GTD-1250 gas turbine engine on T-80U, KMDB in Ukrainian SSR, which is one of the developer of T-80U (turret system) developed their diesel-powered alternative with the 6TD engine pack by mid-1980s as the Object 478; the new T-80UD has slight alternations to the original Object 219AS (T-80U) design, notably the engine deck, exhaust and composite armor layout in this case. Although it never went on war during Cold War, the tank can be said as the most iconic MBT of the fall of Soviet Union and early days of Russia Federation where it has participated in both the August coup in 1991 and Constitutional Crisis of 1993; as of present, the tank is still used in some quantities by Russia, Ukraine and have been exported to Pakistan in late 1990s.

Introduced in [[Update "Alpha Strike"]] as a new GE premium for the Soviet tech tree, T-80UD retained many similar features from T-80U in terms of protection and mobility; although the slight alternation on composite armor layout decreased the protection by some extent and lacks more advanced ammunitions, the overall combat capability is more than enough to engage targets at similar battle ratings.

Addition of Knotakt-5 ERA on the turret cheeks and UFP allows it to withstand most contemporary APFSDS rounds and HEAT rounds found in its current BR. Typical Russian MBT weakspots still apply; LFP, driver's viewport, etc. Fuel tanks are prone to exploding when hit. The small number of crew (3 crew members) drastically reduces the tank's survivability as a shot through the driver's viewport is likely to kill the driver and one turret crew. The autoloader is located right underneath the turret crew and ammo detonation is very likely when a round penetrates. Side armour is negligible with small pockets of Kontakt-5 near the front offering protection against weaker HEAT rounds and miniscule protection against kinetic rounds.

As T-80U's turret system was in fact developed in Kharkov, T-80UD retained very similar turret design from T-80U and shares identical gun system; in this case, the 125 mm 2A46M-1 smoothbore cannon. The overall performance and firepower is mostly identical to T-80U minus the more advanced 3BM46 APFSDS, this could be a problem when facing more advanced MBTs from NATO forces or PLAGF, but the researchable 3BM42 is more than enough to take out lower tier MBTs or disabling higher tier targets for kill assists, while the remaining ammunition options can leave some flexibility for most scenarios.

Usage in battles

Describe the tactics of playing in the vehicle, the features of using vehicles in the team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view but instead give the reader food for thought. Describe the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).

Pros and cons

Summarise and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in a bulleted list. Try not to use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - use substitutions with softer forms such as "inadequate" and "effective".

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the vehicle in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===, also if applicable).

Media

Excellent additions to the article would be video guides, screenshots from the game, and photos.
