Description
The Object 478B, officially known as theT-80UD and nicknamed "Bereza" (lit. White Birch), is the conventional diesel engine-powered variant of the T-80U series in late-1980s. To replace the fuel-hungry and expensive Klimov GTD-1250 gas turbine engine on T-80U, KMDB in Ukrainian SSR, which is one of the developer of T-80U (turret system) developed their diesel-powered alternative with the 6TD engine pack by mid-1980s as the Object 478; the new T-80UD has slight alternations to the original Object 219AS (T-80U) design, notably the engine deck, exhaust and composite armor layout in this case. Although it never went on war during Cold War, the tank can be said as the most iconic MBT of the fall of Soviet Union and early days of Russia Federation where it has participated in both the August coup in 1991 and Constitutional Crisis of 1993; as of present, the tank is still used in some quantities by Russia, Ukraine and have been exported to Pakistan in late 1990s.
Introduced in Update "Alpha Strike" as a new GE premium for the Soviet tech tree, T-80UD retained many similar features from T-80U in terms of protection and mobility; although the slight alternation on composite armor layout decreased the protection by some extent and lacks more advanced ammunitions, the overall combat capability is more than enough to engage targets at similar battle ratings.
General info
Survivability and armour
Describe armour protection. Note the most well protected and key weak areas. Appreciate the layout of modules as well as the number and location of crew members. Is the level of armour protection sufficient, is the placement of modules helpful for survival in combat? If necessary use a visual template to indicate the most secure and weak zones of the armour.

Notes:
Mobility
Write about the mobility of the ground vehicle. Estimate the specific power and manoeuvrability, as well as the maximum speed forwards and backwards.

Main armament
As T-80U's turret system was in fact developed in Kharkov, T-80UD retained very similar turret design from T-80U and shares identical gun system; in this case, the 125 mm 2A46M-1 smoothbore cannon. The overall performance and firepower is mostly identical to T-80U minus the more advanced 3BM46 APFSDS, this could be a problem when facing more advanced MBTs from NATO forces or PLAGF, but the researchable 3BM42 is more than enough to take out lower tier MBTs or disabling higher tier targets for kill assists, while the remaining ammunition options can leave some flexibility for most scenarios.

Machine guns
Offensive and anti-aircraft machine guns not only allow you to fight some aircraft but also are effective against lightly armoured vehicles. Evaluate machine guns and give recommendations on its use.

Usage in battles
Describe the tactics of playing in the vehicle, the features of using vehicles in the team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view but instead give the reader food for thought. Describe the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).
Pros and cons
Pros:
- Extensive frontal protection with Kontakt-5 ERA
- Variants of different purpose ammunitions for more flexible tactics
- High muzzle velocity for long-range engagements
- Fixed 6.5 second reload thanks to the autoloader
- Sufficient mobility to navigate around the battlefield
- Low overall profile, sometimes enemy vehicle will miss the existence of T-80UD
Cons:
- Unacceptable reverse speed at only -4 km/h due to the inheritance from previous engine pack
- Slightly less durable as T-80U due to composite formula changed
- Inferior gun handling to NATO/PLAGF equivalents
- Lacks more powerful kinetic shells against more advanced MBTs
- Relative slow turret traverse speed for quick response
- Inferior gun depression hinder operations at complicated terrain
- Retains the cramped and fatal interior design of Soviet MBTs
History
Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the vehicle in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main
template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>
, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />
. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===
, also if applicable).
Media
Excellent additions to the article would be video guides, screenshots from the game, and photos.
