Survivability and armour
Examine the survivability of the aircraft. Note how vulnerable the structure is and how secure the pilot is, whether the fuel tanks are armoured, etc. Describe the armour, if there is any, and also mention the vulnerability of other critical aircraft systems.

Usage in battles
The Su-17M2 can fulfill three roles:
- Fighter
You can use the Su-17M2 as a fighter, as it is fairly manoeuvrable and can be equipped with 4 x R-60 missiles. The only planes it can’t outturn are the Mirage III and the J-35. Try to side climb in a 20-25° angle and try to flank the enemy. Come from behind in a support role, try to Boom and Zoom and find enemies low on energy. Do not become slow, since you do not have flares and your best defence against missiles is to maintain a high speed.
- Bomber
The Su-17 can carry up to 8 x 500kg bombs, which is enough for 2 big bases or 4 small bases. After your bombing run, you can quickly return to base and rearm thanks to its great flight performance. Using it as a bomber is a fairly safe way to gain points, survive a long time and help your team by bleeding enemy tickets.
- Multirole
The huge amount of secondary weapons the Su-17M2 can carry allows you to play as a multirole aircraft. For example, you can take 6 x 500 kg bombs and 4 R-60 missiles. This way, you can start by bombing up to 3 bases and then play it as a fighter.
- Enemies worth noting
- The Mirage IIIC and the J35D: These planes are also serious foes as they out turn everything at their BR (keep in mind that the Draken is more manoeuvrable than the Mirage) so dogfighting them is a death sentence. They're also able to wield deadly missiles, the Draken wields the Swedish license built AIM-9P3s known as RB24Js and the Mirage has access to the extremely effective Matra R550 Magic 1 that pulls 30 Gs and has a higher top speed than other IR guided missiles. The best thing to do against these planes is to do a zoom climb to bleed their speed since they have a lower thrust to weight ratio than you and then do oblique turns since they both bleed a ton of speed when turning and have a lower acceleration than you do. Try to not let them shoot a missile at you since you don’t have flares and will have to try to outturn it. If that happens turn off the afterburner and pull hard.
- Phantoms, particularly F-4E and EJ models: These planes are the most common enemies and targets you should not prioritize first, since you can easily outturn them. In many cases you can evade their AIM-9Js by turning in one direction first, than rolling and switching direction. If you try to turn fight them, pull out your airbrakes to go below 1000 km/h (620 mph), fold out the wings and you won't have any problems. If they try to get out of the turn fight and out accelerate, you can quickly fire one of your R-60's at them, if you have them equipped.
Pros and cons
Summarise and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in the bulleted list. Try not to use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - use substitutions with softer forms such as "inadequate" and "effective".

History
Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the aircraft in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main
template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>
, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />
. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===
, also if applicable).
Media
Excellent additions to the article would be video guides, screenshots from the game, and photos.
