The armour is capable of defeating M735 and most early HEATFS rounds when hitting the composite armour arrays, but the lower plate is very weak due to the layout of the composite armour. There is a fuel tank sandwiched between the composite armour which will usually lead to a fuel fire or even fuel detonation when hit. It is recommended to play hull down if you don't have FPE as the hull protection is very unreliable. The turret cheeks are near-invulnerable to all but the strongest rounds. However as with all MBTs, the area around the gun mantlet is quite weak.

Its mobility is what makes the Leopard 2AV great. The acceleration is good, but making sharp turns at high speed can lead to flipping. Reverse speed is acceptable, enough to get out of a sticky situation quickly.

Notes:

  • Shells are modeled individually and disappear after having been shot or loaded.
  • Rack 2 is a first stage ammo rack located within a blow-out containment
  • It totals 12 shells and gets filled first when loading up the tank and emptied first when firing.
  • If you pack 13 (+27) shells, it will keep the hull empty of ammo.
  • Full reload speed will be realized as long as shells are available in the ready rack 2. If the ready rack is empty, a penalty to reload speed will occur.
  • Simply not firing when the gun is loaded will move ammo from rack 1 into rack 2. Firing will interrupt the restocking of the ready rack.

There are 2 x 7.62 machine guns on the turret and 1 coaxial 7.62 machine gun. They are useful to shoot at low-flying jets and helicopters and can occasionally penetrate some lightly-armoured vehicles.

Usage in battles

Describe the tactics of playing in the vehicle, the features of using vehicles in the team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view but instead give the reader food for thought. Describe the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Hull can block at least one HE hit from late game tanks without consequences (unless it was an SPG)
  • Turret front is almost HEATFS proof, can survive some weaker ATGMs
  • Has blowout panels, which greatly increases survivability
  • 8 smoke groups
  • Has three MGs with focused fire to get rid of slow-flying ATGMs
  • Mobility is a bit better than comparable MBTs
  • Most of the fuel tanks are external

Cons:

  • Final ammunition has worse angled and flat penetration than TTD or TAM 2C
  • No thermal scope at rank VI
  • If ammo rack is hit directly through the tank, it is likely that the tank simply explodes; a penetrating hit on either side can render the tank unable to fight regardless
  • While the fuel tank in the front reduces spalling, the armour plate behind it makes spall again
  • The turret cheek can be penetrated by even autocannon-equipped SPAAs, as it takes less than 50 mm of penetration
  • The armour on the hull is not nearly enough to stop any APFSDS rounds
  • The turret roof is not HE proof and it is reasonably easy to hit machine guns above it

History

The Leopard 2AV is a prototype tank design submitted to the US Army competition where it competed against the XM-1, predecessor of the Abrams MBT, at the Aberdeen Proving Ground. The tank is a further development of the Leopard 2K project. American Army specialists involved in the project advised to increase the tank's protection, which by the beginning of the 70s was inadequate to meet modern challenges. In 1977, a version of the Leopard 2K with a modified hull and turret was submitted for testing in the United States under the designation Leopard 2AV. The prototype went overseas as two experimental chassis and three finished turrets. The tank was armed with the 105 mm L7A3 rifled gun, developed in Great Britain. After the tests ended, the tank was equipped with a 120-mm Rheinmetall gun, right there, at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. It was this version that later went into series production under the designation Leopard 2.
