The Leopard 2 PSO (Peace Support Operations) is a modernized version of the German Leopard 2 tank. KMW developed it in accordance with the Bundeswehr's requirements for a tank adapted to combat operations in urban areas as part of peacekeeping operations. It was built based on the Leopard 2A6EX Demo II prototype, which has a Euro-Powerpack engine and a Leopard 2A5 turret. During the modification process, the vehicle received additional modular armor for the hull and turret that could be changed depending on the task at hand; reinforced underbody protection; and a remotely controlled FLW 200 combat module that can mount various weapons, including 5.56 mm and 12.7 mm machine guns and 40 mm autocannons. The vehicle was also equipped with a bulldozer blade for clearing obstacles and improved optics. KMW first unveiled the Leopard 2 PSO at an exhibition in 2006. However, the program's initial vehicle modernization was postponed and ultimately discontinued in favor of upgrading the tanks to the Leopard 2A7 standard.
The Leopard 2 PSO was introduced in Update 2.29 "Sons of Attila". It is an improvement to the Leopard 2A5 and is equipped with additional composite armor for enhanced protection against HEAT rounds. A large-caliber machine gun has also been mounted on the turret roof to defend against aircraft or lightly armored targets. The increased weight is offset by a new 1,600-horsepower Euro-Powerpack engine, which gives the tank better performance than the base version. However, downsides such as weak hull and mantlet protection, as well as poor hull ammo rack location, were not addressed.
