The Leopard 2A7V, where the "V" stands for "Verbessert," meaning "improved" in German, is a modern version of the German Leopard 2 main battle tank. In the mid-2010s, the German government decided against cutting back on the Bundeswehr's armored forces. In collaboration with Krauss-Maffei-Wegmann, the manufacturer of the Leopard 2 MBT, they formulated a plan to produce additional vehicles that met a new, improved standard.
Thanks to a modular armor package on the front of the hull, the Leopard 2A7V features improved protection, as well as improved optics and a new transmission adapted to the increased weight. The new vehicle was officially unveiled in October 2019 and entered service with the Bundeswehr in September 2021. During a ceremony on September 15, 2021, the first four tanks were officially handed over to the 393rd Tank Battalion (PzBtl), which is stationed in Bad Frankenhausen, Germany. Currently, all 104 of the Leopard 2A7V tanks ordered by Germany are in service with the Bundeswehr.
The Leopard 2A7V was introduced in Update 2.33 "Air Superiority". At first glance, the Leopard 2A7V appears identical to the Leopard 2A6. It has the same 1,500 hp engine and 120 mm L/55 gun with the standard set of shells. However, the Leopard 2A7V's protection and electronics are superior. Similar to the Swedish Strv 122A, the Leopard 2A7V received an additional armor package on the front of the hull, which significantly improves its protection against APFSDS. The tank can also be equipped with mine protection; however, this increases its weight from 64 tons to ~67 tons, affecting the Leopard's speed. Another important difference between the Leopard 2A7V and its predecessor is its new third-generation thermal imagers for the commander, gunner, and driver.
