In 2005, all A-10's built began receiving Precision Engagement Modification (PEM) upgrades, which include an improved fire control system, upgraded cockpit displays, AGM-65G/L Maverick guided air-to-surface missiles, the ability to deliver GBU-10/12 Paveway II bombs with laser guidance, and the integration of an outboard sighting container LITENING II, guided bombs by JDAM, consisting of a set of equipment based on GPS technology that converts existing free-falling bombs into all-weather adjustable ammunition. As of 2022, the US Air Force has 281 A-10C Thunderbolt II attack aircraft in service.

The modificated "Warthog" not only retained all the advantages of the previous A-10, but also received a lot of new and interesting things: a target designation system was added to the pilot's helmet, which highlights allies (when viewed from the cockpit), a LITENING II sighting container for pointing bombs with laser guidance Paveway and new JDAM bombs with satellite guidance. The new AGM-65G/L with high-explosive warheads, which can be guided even in bad weather, but cannot capture moving targets, and to combat aerial targets, in the arsenal of the "Warthog" appeared the AIM-9M with a low-smoke trail.

Offensive armament

Main article: GAU-8/A (30 mm)

The A-10C is armed with:

  • A choice between two presets:
    • 1 x 30 mm GAU-8/A cannon, chin-mounted (1,174 rpg) + 480 x countermeasures
    • 1 x 30 mm GAU-8/A cannon + 480 x countermeasures + MAW

Suspended armament

Describe the aircraft's suspended armament: additional cannons under the wings, bombs, rockets and torpedoes. This section is especially important for bombers and attackers. If there is no suspended weaponry remove this subsection.

Default weapon presets
  • 3 x 600 gal drop tanks
  • 2 x AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles
  • 4 x AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles
  • 4 x AIM-9M Sidewinder missiles
  • 98 x Hydra-70 M247 rockets
  • 84 x APKWS II (M151) missiles
  • 84 x APKWS II (M282) missiles
  • 6 x AGM-65D missiles
  • 2 x AGM-65L missiles
  • 2 x AGM-65G missiles
  • 10 x 500 lb LDGP Mk 82 bombs (5,000 lb total)
  • 12 x 500 lb LDGP Mk 82 bombs (6,000 lb total)
  • 6 x 2,000 lb LDGP Mk 84 bombs (12,000 lb total)
  • 10 x 500 lb Mk 82 AIR bombs (5,000 lb total)
  • 12 x 500 lb Mk 82 AIR bombs (6,000 lb total)
  • 6 x 2,000 lb LDGP Mk 84 Air bombs (12,000 lb total)
  • 17 x 277 kg GBU-12 Paveway II bombs (4,709 kg total)
  • 6 x 957 kg GBU-10 Paveway II bombs (5,742 kg total)
  • 6 x 500 lb GBU-38 JDAM bombs (3,000 lb total)
  • 6 x 1,970 lb GBU-31 JDAM bombs (11,820 lb total)

Usage in battles

Describe the tactics of playing in the aircraft, the features of using aircraft in a team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but instead, give the reader food for thought. Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • AIM-9Ms are very potent against its range of targets
  • HMD allows for off boring the missiles
    • Very advanced HMD shows IFF (in cockpit view) of both friendly ground and air units.
  • MAWS (Automatic release of countermeasures)
  • Large array of CAS ordinance
  • Large pool of countermeasures
  • Decent turn rate
  • Laser Warning System

Cons:

  • Very slow for a jet
    • Subsonic, and can get outsped by propeller-driven planes
    • Even slower when mounting further ordinance
  • Large target

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the aircraft in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===, also if applicable).

Media

Excellent additions to the article would be video guides, screenshots from the game, and photos.
