The name was the evaluation prototype of a commander tank version of the T-80U tested in the 1980s. The design of T-80UK was mostly similar to the T-80U, but upgraded with TVD, Shtora-1 soft-kill APS, new FCS, and communication equipment. The vehicle was evaluated and passed state certification in the 1990s, but the certified T-80UK in Russian Army service did not install Shtora-1 APS, likely a result of funding problems during production and saving equipment for more advanced tanks like the T-90. The only prototype is mostly used during army exhibitions or army open days.

it features a Shtora-1 soft-kill active protection system. This tank is a Jack-of-All-Trades tank. Good Armour, coupled with decent mobility and a gun with extreme velocity, this version of the T-80 (Family) is a very versatile tank at its Battle-Rating.
+
The T-80UK was introduced in Update "Drone Age" as the tier VII squadron vehicle of Soviet ground tech-tree. Aside from the sensors and IR jammers for the Shtora-1 soft-kill APS, as well as the HE-TF version of the infamous 3OF26, the overall performance of the T-80UK is identical to its tech-tree predecessor, giving players sufficient protection at its tier while boasting a wide variety of ammunition to take down enemy vehicles. However, players will need to make every shot count, as the tank doesn't have the best APFSDS at its tier (particularly against tough foes with protected UFPs like the ZTZ99), as well as the inferior gun handling on Soviet tanks (pre-2016 Russian MBTs).

The T-80UK is one of the most protected tanks in the game, itself being based on the T-80BVM. The ERA is quite effective, causing lots of inexperienced players to rage when it deletes their HEAT-FS rounds. The ERA is also good at blocking KE rounds. Of course, never forget your weak spots, namely the lower glacis, driver's hatch and viewport, and the area around the cannon breech. These are however pretty small targets at range, but still remember to hide them.

The hull armour on the T-80UK is a 5-layer armour, which is comprised of 50 mm high-hardness rolled armour, 30 mm of textolite, 50 mm of high-hardness rolled armour, 30 mm textolite, and 50 mm of high-hardness rolled armour. On top of this armour array, there is another form of protection which is Kontakt-5, a second generation explosive reactive armour. The turret armour on the T-80UK is also covered by Kontakt-5 on the front of the turret.

Shtora Soft-kill Active Protection System
The Shtora-1 active protection system will be familiar to the veterans of the T-90. It works by jamming the laser of the incoming missile and disrupting their guidance. The Shtora-1 can protect against most missiles except for beam-riding laser-guided missiles (like 9K127 Vikhr). Beware that it only works when the IRCM is turned on.

The mobility of the tank is not bad. The reverse speed is 3 times faster than the T-64B! It allows for getting out of sticky situations (like a Oh-No-He-Gonna-Shoot-My-Lower-Glacis situation) and the forward speed is decent, albeit lacking to tanks like the Leopard 2A5.
+
T-80UK didn't include any changes on mobility and the overall upgrades for the prototype have negligible impact on the weight of vehicle, therefore the good old Klimov GTD-1250 gas turbine can still push the tank to up to 70 km/h. However, caution is advised when pushing, as the tank doesn't have the best reverse speed; while -12 km/h is one of the best among Soviet/Russian MBTs, this is not comparable to the abilities of NATO vehicles.

2A46M-1 (125 mm)

The 125mm is nothing new. The only thing that is different from the T-80BVM is the 30F26 EDKV round, a specialized version of the 30F26.
+
Aside from having TVD sights and FCS for time-fuzed HE shells, the 2A46M-1 on T-80UK performs identically to its base model. It has a larger calibre than NATO tanks and access to a variety of ammunition ranging from APFSDS to ATGMs which are good for taking down enemies from distance with devastating firepower. However, the slow overall turret traverse rate still haunts the tank, so it is recommended pre-aim the gun towards directions from which the enemy might suddenly appear for minimal reaction time - the T-80UK doesn't have much to spare.

The T-80UK is a command variant of the T-80U. As such, the playstyle will not change much. The most notable difference between the two tanks is the soft-kill active protection system, which will disrupt the guidance of any ATGMs headed in the direction of the tank, provided the turret is facing the launching vehicle.
 +

 +
While the armour is reasonably good, it will fail to stop some APFSDS rounds, so it is important that you refrain from relying on it. Remember that the armour is not meant to protect the tank, it is meant to protect the crew. With that said, you'll find yourself absorbing a significant portion of poorly-placed or rushed shots in your direction, provided they are not from the side or rear. It is also important to remember, the ERA is expendable. Once it is gone, your tank will be left with significant weak spots that can, and will be abused by your enemies. It is best not to get hit in the first place.

Under the Soviet armoured doctrine, tank companies would receive a commander tank just like many major powers during the Cold War. In the Soviet case, the tank would also receive FCS upgrades aside from new communication equipment. The T-80UK was a result of such doctrine, featuring Shtora-1 soft-kill APS, Agava-2 TVD imager, atmospheric sensors, R-163U and R-163K radio, TNA-4 navigation systems, time-fuze controls and AB-1-P28 APU. The tank was likely being tested during the final days of the Soviet Union, and passed state certification during the 1990s. Likely due to insufficient funds and saving Shtora-1 APS for future tanks such as the T-72BU, the current model of the T-80UK looks extremely like an original T-80U with longer antenna for the radio.
Pakistan
Ukrainian exports of the T-80UD have been moderately successful. In 1993 and 1995, Ukraine demonstrated the tank to Pakistan, which was looking for a new main battle tank. The tank was tested in Pakistan and in August 1996 Pakistan decided to buy 320 T-80UD tanks from Ukraine for $650 million in two variants: a standard Object 478B and export Object 478BE.The tanks were all supposed to be delivered in 1997. After the first batch of 15 vehicles had been shipped in February 1997, Russia protested that it held the rights to the tank and that Ukraine couldn't export it. Nearly 70% of T-80UD components were produced outside of Ukraine (mainly in Russia). Under the guise of keeping good relations with India, one of its most important military customers, Russia withheld 2A46-2 125 mm smoothbore guns, cast turrets and other technology, which forced Ukraine to make its tank industry independent. It developed domestic components, including a welded turret, which was in use on the new Ukrainian T-84. Ukraine was able to ship 20 more T-80UD tanks to Pakistan between February and May 1997. These 35 tanks were from Ukrainian Army stocks of 52 T-80UDs; they were built in the Malyshev plant several years before but were not delivered to their original destination. Their abilities were below the standard agreed by both Ukraine and Pakistan. The contract was completed by shipping another 285 Ukrainian T-80UD MBTs between 1997 and early 2002. These had the welded turret and other manufacturing features of the T-84.

Cyprus
Cyprus is the first foreign country to officially obtain T-80 tanks. Russia sold 27 T-80U and 14 T-80UK for $174 million to Cyprus in 1996. The tanks arrived in two batches. The first shipment consisted of 27 T-80U MBTs arriving in 1996, while the second batch of 14 T-80UK MBTs arrived in 1997. This significantly improved the abilities of Cypriot army armoured forces; their most potent tank until then was the AMX-30B2. New tanks gave the Cypriot National Guard the edge in a possible confrontation with the Turkish Army in Northern Cyprus. In October 2009 Cyprus ordered another batch of 41 used T-80Us and T-80UKs from Russia for €115 million. Deliveries were completed in the first half of 2011.

United States
The US government obtained one T-80U from the United Kingdom. It was evaluated at Eglin Air Force Base. In 2003, Ukraine transferred four T-80UD MBTs to the US.

Failed export attempts
Apart from Cyprus and the People's Republic of China, Russia has tried to export T-80 MBTs to Turkey and Greece, who were looking for new tanks. These two attempts have failed.Sweden regarded the T-80 an alternative for its mechanized brigades in the early 1990s should the Leclerc be adopted for her armoured brigades, but since the new upgraded Leopard 2 (Strv 122) was chosen, Leopard 2A4s (Strv 121) equipped the mechanized brigades as to simplify logistics.

Description

The T-80UK was the evaluation prototype of a commander tank version of the T-80U tested in the 1980s.

5-layer hull armour on the T-80UK
Kontakt-5 ERA on T-80UK

The hull armour on the T-80UK is a 5-layer armour, which is comprised of 50 mm high-hardness rolled armour, 30 mm of textolite, 50 mm of high-hardness rolled armour, 30 mm textolite, and 50 mm of high-hardness rolled armour. On top of this armour array, there is another form of protection which is Kontakt-5, a second generation explosive reactive armour. The turret armour on the T-80UK is also covered by Kontakt-5 on the front of the turret.

Main article: 2A46M-1 (125 mm)

Aside from having TVD sights and FCS for time-fuzed HE shells, the 2A46M-1 on T-80UK performs identically to its base model. It has a larger calibre than NATO tanks and access to a variety of ammunition ranging from APFSDS to ATGMs which are good for taking down enemies from distance with devastating firepower. However, the slow overall turret traverse rate still haunts the tank, so it is recommended pre-aim the gun towards directions from which the enemy might suddenly appear for minimal reaction time - the T-80UK doesn't have much to spare.

Usage in battles

The T-80UK is a command variant of the T-80U. As such, the playstyle will not change much. The most notable difference between the two tanks is the soft-kill active protection system, which will disrupt the guidance of any ATGMs headed in the direction of the tank, provided the turret is facing the launching vehicle.

Pros and cons

Pros:

 • Soft kill passive protection system
 • Overall good frontal armour
 • Good mobility
 • Effective ERA, capable of stopping many of the APFSDS rounds you'll face

Cons:

 • Autoloader carousel is a significant vulnerability
 • The vehicle is loud, effectively removing any sense of stealth
 • Rather slow turret traverse and reverse speed significantly reduce reactivity
 • Subpar gun depression

History
