Description
The KPz Leopard 2AV, PT-19/T19-AV is a gift rank VII German medium tank with a battle rating of 10.0 (AB/RB/SB). It was introduced during Update "Danger Zone" as a reward for the 2022 Summer Quest event.
General info
Survivability and armour
The armour is capable of defeating M735 and most early HEATFS rounds when hitting the composite armour arrays, but the lower plate is very weak due to the layout of the composite armour. There is a fuel tank sandwiched between the composite armour which will usually lead to a fuel fire or even fuel detonation when hit. It is recommended to play hull down if you don't have FPE as the hull protection is very unreliable. The turret cheeks are near-invulnerable to all but the strongest rounds. However as with all MBTs, the gun mantlet is quite weak, resulting in a rather large weak spot when playing hull-down.
Armour type:
Armour | Front (Slope angle) | Sides | Rear | Roof |
---|---|---|---|---|
Hull | 340 - 360 mm | 50 mm Top 20 mm Bottom |
20 mm | 20 - 45 mm |
Turret | 320 - 415mm Turret front 250~ mm Gun mantlet |
160 mm (KE) - 260 mm (CE) | 28 - 59 mm | 20 - 40 mm |
Cupola | 80 mm | 80 mm | 80 mm | 18 mm |
Notes:
Mobility
The Leopard 2AV has effectively the same powerpack as its successors; a 1,500 hp MTU MB 873 Ka-501engine allows this Leopard to quickly manoeuvre the map. Although, the Leopard 2AV is slightly heavier than the Leopard 2A4 and significantly heavier than the Leopard 2K, resulting in a loss of 1.2 hp/t against the 2A4 and 4.0 hp/t against the 2K.

Modifications and economy
Start with Parts and FPE, then it is preferred to go for DM23, as the stock 105mm HEATFS is inadequate for this BR.

---|---|---|---|
40 | 13 (+27) | 1 (+39) | No |
Notes:
- Shells are modeled individually and disappear after having been shot or loaded.
- Rack 2 is a first stage ammo rack located within a blow-out containment
- It totals 12 shells and gets filled first when loading up the tank and emptied first when firing.
- If you pack 13 (+27) shells, it will keep the hull empty of ammo.
- Full reload speed will be realized as long as shells are available in the ready rack 2. If the ready rack is empty, a penalty to reload speed will occur.
- Simply not firing when the gun is loaded will move ammo from rack 1 into rack 2. Firing will interrupt the restocking of the ready rack.
Machine guns
There are 2 x 7.62 machine guns on the turret and 1 coaxial 7.62 machine gun. They are useful to shoot at low-flying jets and helicopters and can occasionally penetrate some lightly-armoured vehicles.

Usage in battles
Describe the tactics of playing in the vehicle, the features of using vehicles in the team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view but instead give the reader food for thought. Describe the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).
Pros and cons
Pros:
- Turret front is almost impervious to chemical projectiles, with exceptions to stronger ATGMs commonly found at this BR
- Blowout panels for the turret bustle, greatly improving survivability
- 16 smoke grenades firing 2 at a time, for 8 pops in total
- Three machine guns with focused fire allows this tank to dispatch slower ATGMs
- High mobility compared to its contemporaries
- Most fuel tanks are external
Cons:
- DM33 (105) at its BR may feel underwhelming
- No thermals at rank VI
- Turret bustle carries less ammo than other production Leopard 2 variants at 12 shells instead of 15, carrying more will result in detonation of the tank if the secondary ammo stowage is hit.
- Additional armor plate behind the frontal fuel tank may produce spall if penetrated.
- Hull armor is inadequate for its BR
History
The Leopard 2AV is a prototype tank design submitted to the US Army competition where it competed against the XM-1, predecessor of the Abrams MBT, at the Aberdeen Proving Ground. The tank is a further development of the Leopard 2K project. American Army specialists involved in the project advised to increase the tank's protection, which by the beginning of the 70s was inadequate to meet modern challenges. In 1977, a version of the Leopard 2K with a modified hull and turret was submitted for testing in the United States under the designation Leopard 2AV. The prototype went overseas as two experimental chassis and three finished turrets. The tank was armed with the 105 mm L7A3 rifled gun, developed in Great Britain. After the tests ended, the tank was equipped with a 120-mm Rheinmetall gun, right there, at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. It was this version that later went into series production under the designation Leopard 2.
