Description

The Swedish J9 was nothing more than an American P-35A, which received the designation J9 in the Swedish Air Force. The P-35 was chosen in 1935 in a competition for a single seat fighter for the USAAC, however, the USAAC later rejected the P-35 n favour of Curtis's design in 1937. Thus, Seversky and their P-35 went to Europe looking for possible buyers, Sweden set 3 orders, one for 15, another for 45 and a last one for 60, the first 60 aircrafts arrived without issues, however the last 60 were diverted to the Pacific Theatre, where they suffered very heavy losses.

It was introduced during Update "Air Superiority" as a reward for the 2023 Winter Extreme event. The J9 features a very peculiar design, being simmilar to early italian monoplane fighters. It has access to 4 MGs, of which 2 are hard hitting 13.2mm guns with HEF shells. The aircraft is a bit slow compared to others around its BR, but it compensates this with a very good turning radius and a decent climb rate, it should be used as a dogfighter, entering fights from above to have lots of energy when turning.

Usage in battles

The J9 Early is a good fighter in the hands of a skilled dogfighter. It does not have the best acceleration, nor the best top speed, in order to succeed these are the recommended guidelines for usage in battles.

Climb to medium to high altitude, around 4000-5000m, in this position, dive onto enemy fighters or try to destroy those trying to intercept you from below. The J9 is a very capable dogfighter as long as it has energy, since it can pull high G turns with sufficient speed. Climbing to this altitude, gives you enough room to make mistakes, since when diving against an enemy, even if you miss, you should have enough energy to pull away from danger and up into the sky, beware that this tactic is not recommended when other fighters are at the same altitude as you.

Also be aware that the J9 starts to compress at around 400KM/h, so dont dive for too long or you might end up crashing onto the ground.

Pros and cons

Pros:

• 13.2 mm cannons fire HEF rounds
• Very agile body, able to make high G turns quickly with enough energy
• Decent climb rate for its BR

Cons:

• Ailerons compress heavily above 380 km/h
• Low top speed
• No armour for critical components
