− | + | The Mirage 2000D (Diversifié, "multi-role") is the attack variant of the Mirage 2000. Originally developed from the 2000N, the 2000D received many attack aircraft features while also retaining some aspects of the later 2000C (Thomson RDI radar and SNECMA M53-P2 engine). The 2000D featured an NVG-compatible cockpit (AN/AVS-9 NVG), better HOTAS, more screens for the pilot and back-seater, Antilope 50 terrain-following system, ICMS 2 countermeasure system, GPS, SERVAL RWR, Chameleon jammer, and Spirale dispensers mounted in the rear of the Karman fairings. In addition to the new avionics, the 2000D could carry all dumb munitions, laser-guided weapons, and the Armat anti-radar missile.
+ | |||
+ | The 2000D was involved with many different conflicts, primarily in Africa and the Middle East. The 2000D was present in Libya, Mali, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. During Operation Harmattan, in conjunction with other fighters, a 2000D dropped 2 laser-guided bombs stopping Gaddafi's convoy, then leading to the capture of Gaddafi and his death. The Mirage 2000D is still in service with France, which is its only operator.

This page is about the French jet fighter Mirage 2000D-R1. For other versions, see Mirage 2000 (Family). |
Contents
Description
The Mirage 2000D-R1 was the dedicated ground attack variant of the Mirage 2000, based in the Mirage 2000D, which in itself, was based in the Mirage 2000N, a nuclear strike variant. It had a conventional two-seat configuration, like most ground attackers, and incorporated a series of improvements to increase its survivability, like improved countermeasure pods, better electronic countermeasures, an improved RWR, and for increased accuracy against ground targets, it received the same weaponry as the Mirage 2000-5F would later receive, that being AS-30L air to ground missiles, laser guided bombs, and targeting pods. It still retained the same radar as the ones in the Mirage 2000C.
It was introduced in Update "Apex Predators". The Mirage 2000D-R1 is the lowest BR Mirage 2000 variant, and for a good reason: while it has access to very precise ground ordnance, this comes in small numbers, being able to take 2 x GBU-12s and 2 x AS-30L Nords at the same time, however while doing this, it can also carry 2 x Matra Magic 2 IR missiles. It has a two seat configuration, with more weight, but it still has access to the powerful engine of the Mirage 2000C family, which means that it has good acceleration and low speeds and a high top speed, at the cost of a relatively high fuel consumption, especially when compared to the Mirage F1. In air battles, try using your ordnance to destroy a base, then switch to air targets using your Magic 2s. However, this vehicle is more suited for ground battle, staying at high altitude to drop laser-guided bombs, and then proceeding to the laser-guided ATGMs at a lower altitude. The AS-30L Nords are specially useful to destroy enemy SPAA from long distances before approaching the battlefield, since their HE warhead is not as reliable against armoured targets as a more conventional HEAT warhead.

Survivability and armour
Examine the survivability of the aircraft. Note how vulnerable the structure is and how secure the pilot is, whether the fuel tanks are armoured, etc. Describe the armour, if there is any, and also mention the vulnerability of other critical aircraft systems.

Usage in battles
Describe the tactics of playing in the aircraft, the features of using aircraft in a team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but instead, give the reader food for thought. Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).
Pros and cons
Pros:
- Has excellent flight characteristics; very responsive engine and flight control surfaces
- Access to tier 1 countermeasures that gives access to MAW and a total of 270 CMs (168 being large-calibre); selection of flare/chaff to your choosing, besides 48 small-calibre chaff
- Stock R.550 Magic II all-aspect heat-seekers leaves you with plenty defensive firepower
- All-round great ground-pounding ordnance, including 4 types of laser guided bombs, 2 types of unguided bombs, and the vastly powerful AS-30L laser guided missiles
- Thermal camera pod lets you find ground targets with ease in combined battles
- External gunpod has access to 600 rounds, providing plenty of trigger time
- Being an attack aircraft does not increase the spawn point of other Mirage 2000s on Ground RB
Cons:
- Relatively heavy when fully loaded with ordnance
- Gunpod adds weight and drag, hindering the flight performance
- Carrying countermeasures blocks the drogue chute, meaning landings take more time, especially if landing with ordnance
- Laser-guided bomb choice is limited to only one of 2 x GBU-12, 1 x GBU-16, 1 x BGL-1000, or 1 x GBU-24
- Only 2 short-range missiles and 5 x 250 kg dumb bombs as armament when stock
History
The Mirage 2000D (Diversifié, "multi-role") is the attack variant of the Mirage 2000.
The 2000D was involved with many different conflicts, primarily in Africa and the Middle East.
