Around 1950 the new [[wikipedia:Sverdlov-class_cruiser|Sverdlov-class]] cruisers caused concern in the Royal Navy, over the fear that the Soviet Navy was expanding into a wide-ranging blue water navy. A new weapon, Red Angel, was developed to meet this threat. This was larger than Uncle Tom and had a warhead intended to attack the deck armour of Sverdlovs. A salvo of six hits was thought to be sufficient to disable a Sverdlov.

Red Angel was 10 feet 9 inches (3.28 m) long and 11.25 inches (286 mm) in diameter. Overall weight was 1,055 lb (479 kg) with an 88 lb (40 kg) warhead. Like the Uncle Tom it had flip-out rear fins, but Tom's four large fins were replaced by six smaller ones.

It was first deployed on the [https://wiki.warthunder.com/Wyvern_S4 Westland Wyvern] turboprop, but had always been earmarked for the new jet naval strike aircraft developed in response to the Sverdlov threat, the [https://wiki.warthunder.com/Buccaneer_S.2 Blackburn Buccaneer]. The high-speed Buccaneer was noted for its rotating bomb bay and internal weapons stowage. This could carry four of the Red Angels.

Description

The Red Angel rocket (scale is approximate)

Write an introduction to the article in 2-3 small paragraphs. Briefly tell us about the history of the development and combat using the weaponry and also about its features. Compile a list of air, ground, or naval vehicles that feature this weapon system in the game.

General info

Rocket characteristics
Mass 478 kg
Explosive mass 11.97 kg
Explosive type TNT
Armour Penetration up to 86 mm

Effective damage

The Red Angel's high explosive TNT warhead (11.97kg) explodes immediately on impact. Damage is caused mostly by blat overpressure and fragmentation.

Comparison with analogues

The Red Angel is statistically identical to the Uncle Tom.

Usage in battles

The Red Angel was designed as an anti-ship rocket and is best used as such.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Higher explosive payload than a single RP-3.
  • Near-misses are a little more forgiving than with an RP-3
  • Higher penetration than the RP-3
  • Direct hits against most Coastal boats or small Bluewater ships will usually be fatal.

Cons:

  • Extremely heavy
  • Low velocity
  • Planes can only carry 2 rockets
  • Compared to the Tiny Tim or RP-3, it has a very bad weight-to-damage ratio

History

Examine the history of the creation and combat usage of the weapon in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the weapon and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Weapon-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />.
