Towards the end of WWII, multiple captured German prototype jet bombers found their way into Soviet hands, and were quickly analysed and reverse-engineered. One of the first successful production jet bombers to incorporate the technologies learned from these planes was the new IL-28 bomber, which would go on to become one of the staples of air forces of the Eastern Bloc during the '50s and '60s. One such operator was the Hungarian Air Force, who acquired the type in the late '50s and kept using it until it was eventually replaced by the [[Su-22M3 (Italy)|Su-22M3]] in the frontline bomber/strike role.

In-game, it finds itself at an advantage when doing this at its battle rating, due to its generous airspawn and powerful tail gunners. Description

The IL-28 (Italy) is an Italian jet bomber introduced in Update "Alpha Strike" with a Battle Rating of 8.0 (AB/RB/SB).

In the late 1950s, the Hungarian Air Force acquired IL-28 bombers from the Soviet Union. It would see service during the Cold War, eventually being replaced in Hungarian service by the Su-22M3 in the frontline bomber/strike role. This aircraft's camouflage represents IL-28 no.'55' of the Hungarian Air Force, currently on display in the Airplane Museum of Szolnok, in Szolnok, Hungary.

In-game, the Hungarian IL-28 is identical to its Soviet brother, and as such it will perform identically. This aircraft fills the role of the "fast frontline bomber", like the previous propeller-engined Tu-2S-59. This role focuses on interdicting the enemy airspace quickly, striking targets precisely, and then leaving before enemy fighters can intercept. The Hungarian IL-28 may find itself at an advantage when doing this at its battle rating, due to its airspawn and powerful tail gunners. All in all, this bomber can teach players of the Italian tech tree the playstyle of high speed interdiction and strike bombing, preparing them for future aircraft in this line such as the following Su-22M3.

Usage in battles

Describe the tactics of playing in the aircraft, the features of using aircraft in a team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but instead, give the reader food for thought. Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Powerful rear 23 mm cannon turret
  • Very fast - many early jet fighters cannot catch it at top speed
  • Powerful and flexible ordnance capacity
  • Highly armoured tail gunner position
  • Gunner can cover a large area of the rear and the sides because of the turret design
  • Good acceleration

Cons:

  • Fuel tanks are not protected by any armour
  • Fairly small payload compared to its counterparts
  • Able to be intercepted by Korean War-era jet aircraft
  • Poor roll rate; any wing damage will often result in a roll that is impossible to pull out of
  • Cockpit features no rear visibility
  • Fast acceleration means that you might break the wings if you don't pay attention
  • Forward guns are primarily for self-defense head-ons, as they're hard to aim with poor flight manoeuvrability

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the aircraft in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the vehicle and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Vehicle-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />. This section may also include the vehicle's dev blog entry (if applicable) and the in-game encyclopedia description (under === In-game description ===, also if applicable).
