The IL-2M Type 3, also known as the IL-2 KSW ("Swept Wing"), was an advanced version of the two-seat IL-2M (1943). The new AM-38F engine enabled the addition of a rear gunner position with a defensive turret while maintaining the aircraft’s performance. However, this shifted the center of gravity rearward, negatively affecting the aircraft's handling characteristics. To address this, the wing was redesigned with a 15-degree sweep on the leading edges, hence the “Swept Wing” designation. Additional improvements included shock-absorbing springs and a counterbalance in the elevator control system. Serial production of the IL-2 KSW began in autumn 1943. Most aircraft were built with metal wings rather than wooden ones, which improved durability and field repairability.

The IL-2M Type 3 has been in the game since the beginning of the Closed Beta Test prior to Update 1.27. Thanks to its heavy armor protection, the aircraft offers exceptional survivability, reliably shielding the pilot and engine from small caliber fire. Its robust airframe can also withstand hits from heavy machine guns and even cannons. With a wide selection of suspended ordnance and powerful offensive armament, the Il-2M poses a significant threat to ground vehicles in mixed battles and is an excellent aircraft for head-on attacks. The addition of a rear defensive gunner turns the IL-2M from an easy target into a dangerous opponent capable of fighting back. However, these strengths come at the cost of mediocre flight performance, making it difficult to escape pursuing enemy fighters.
