History

Just as the Fubuki-class is considered by some to be the first modern destroyer, the 127 mm/50-calibre 3rd Year Type can be called the first modern destroyer gun. When mounted on the ships of the Fubuki-class, these guns were put in the first weatherproof, splinterproof, and gas-proof mounts on a destroyer, and on later turrets, they were dual-purpose mounts. A built-up gun that first had three and later two layers for the barrel, the 127 mm suffered from drawbacks including slow training speed, the fact shells were rammed by hand, and a lack of AA fire control making it almost useless as an anti-aircraft weapon. Along with the Fubuki-class, the Imperial Japanese Navy used the gun on most of their interwar destroyers including the Akatsuki, Hatsuharu, Shiratsuyu, Asashio, Kagero, Yugumo, and Shimakaze classes. The 127 mm guns were also mounted on the Chidori-class gunboats, but the three guns were too large and caused the boats to capsize so they were replaced by the 120 mm/45 3rd Year Type. The guns had Welin breech blocks and used bagged charges.
