The armor on the P40 can be described as “decent”. While the actual armor values are not high, sufficient slopage on the upper glacis, and upper side armor sloping is very similar to the sides of T-34’s. The turret is a weak area, the side cheeks are only 50mm thick, angling the turret can alleviate this somewhat. You can reliably survive smaller calibre shells, but do not seek out confrontation. While the armor can bounce the 75mm M3 cannon, on Shermans and is almost completely resistant frontally to the Sherman 105’s HE, HEAT will obliterate the P40, and the crew is packed inside. Full penetrations are generally fatal.

The Fiat-Ansaldo P40 is a rank II Italian medium tank with a battle rating of 3.3 (AB/RB/SB). It was introduced in Update 1.85 "Supersonic".

General info

Survivability and armour

The armour on the P40 can be described as “decent”. While the actual armour values are not high, sufficient slope on the upper glacis and upper side armour sloping are very similar to the sides of T-34’s. The turret is a weak area, the side cheeks are only 50mm thick, angling the turret can alleviate this somewhat. You can reliably survive smaller calibre shells, but do not seek out confrontation. While the armour can bounce the 75mm M3 cannon, on Shermans and is almost completely resistant frontally to the Sherman 105’s HE, HEAT will obliterate the P40, and the crew is packed inside. Full penetrations are generally fatal.

Mobility

Write about the mobility of the ground vehicle. Estimate the specific power and manoeuvrability as well as the maximum speed forward and backwards.

Armaments

Main armament

The 75 mm Ansaldo 75 L/34 cannon mounted on the P40 is appropriate armament for its tier, it combines a decent reload with flexible munitions. A 75 mm APHE round with 79 mm of penetration and a HEAT round with 100 mm of penetration. It is worth noting, either ammunition is usable, however, a mix is preferable. Most enemies will easily fall prey to your APHE round, but T34’s, M4 Shermans, KV1s, are all enemies that require heavier hitting rounds, like the HEAT round. Note turret rotation is abysmal, and traversing the hull is necessary. Low velocity will make longer range combat difficult and the penetration drop off of the APHE round becomes quite noticeable.

Additional armament

Some tanks are armed with several guns in one or more turrets. Evaluate the additional weaponry and give advice on its use. Describe the ammunition available for additional weaponry. Give advice on how to use them and how to fill the ammunition storage. If there is no additional weaponry remove this subsection.

Machine guns

Offensive and anti-aircraft machine guns not only allow you to fight some aircraft but also are effective against lightly armoured vehicles. Evaluate machine guns and give recommendations on its use.

Usage in the battles

Describe the tactics of playing in the vehicle, the features of using vehicles in the team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view but give the reader food for thought. Describe the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Decent frontal armour
  • The gun possesses satisfactory performance at its rank

Cons:

  • Overall penetration is not that good
  • Pitifully low ammo count for each machine gun belt
  • Armor can still be penetrated by a few enemies of rank II, most notably by the long-barreled Panzer IVs

History

Describe the history of the creation and combat usage of the ground vehicle in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too big, take it to a separate article, taking a link to an article about the vehicle and adding a block "/historical reference" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/Name-vehicles/historical reference) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to include links to sources at the end of the article.

Media

An excellent addition to the article will be video guides, as well as screenshots from the game and photos.
