Description
The Barougan (“battle” in Arabic), was a very minor off-shoot of the M.D.450B Ouragan. The main difference was the new gear design that would allow the Barougan to take off from undeveloped runways. The nose gear stayed the same; however, the main gear in the center of the aircraft was very different. The Barougan had four wheels in the center to help absorb the load from grass runways and it proved to be a good design. A tail parachute was also added to decrease the landing distance and make it more viable. Unfortunately for the Barougan, the program was cut short due to budget constraints and was reconverted back to its original configuration.
Introduced in Update 1.73 "Vive la France", the M.D.450B Barougan is a decent early jet fighter. It has four chin-mounted 20 mm cannons and access to bombs as well as SNEB type 23 rockets. Although it has four cannons, the ammo belts are less than desirable and greatly hinder the effectiveness of the guns. The Rolls-Royce engine is decent; although if players choose higher fuel settings, the Barougan will greatly struggle with accelerating quickly and overall energy retention will diminish. Overall, the Barougan is a decent aircraft for players progressing through the French tech tree and serves as a good indicator of upcoming native French jets.

Flight performance
The Barougan flies very similarly to the Ouragan, that means that it is a very capable dogfighter when it sits at low energy states. It's wings allow him to retain energy decently at speeds below 600KM/h, while the top speed and acceleration is not comparable to jets like the Su-11 and Meteor NF.13, it's good handling compensates the that lack of performance at higher speeds.

Survivability and armour

The Barougan is a relatively survivable aircraft, compared to many early jet fighters, it only has a single engine, this makes it fairly small target compared to many other jets like the Mig-9 and F-3D1. However, it wont survive a direct hit from high caliber cannons, and it's vertical control surfaces are specially vulnerable in fights by going over the entire top of the aircraft. Must be noted that all tanks are self sealing, and it also has a reinforced landing gear compared to the Ouragan.
Modifications and economy
The most important upgrades for the Barougan are in the flight performance area, since the standard ammo belts are decent, it's important going for Compressor, Fuselage, Engine and G Suit upgrades, if you plan to use the Barougan for ground attacks, research the Matra SNEB rockets and the 1000lb bombs.Armaments
Offensive armament
The M.D.450B Barougan is armed with:
- 4 x 20 mm M50 cannons, chin-mounted (125 rpg = 500 total)
The four 20mm cannons are clustered on the underside of the fuselage, directly below the pilot. Each is armed with the same amount of ammunition, which means that all guns will fire with each other until empty. An advantage of this chin mounted arrangement is that gun convergence does not play a factor unlike wing-mounted guns.
Suspended armament
The M.D.450B Barougan can be outfitted with the following ordnance:
- Without load
- 2 x 500 lb AN-M64A1 bombs (1,000 lb total)
- 2 x 1,000 lb AN-M65A1 bombs (2,000 lb total)
- 16 x T10 140 rockets
- 16 x T10 151 rockets
- 38 x SNEB type 23 rockets
Usage in battles
This aircraft is usually seen as a bad aircraft, however it has alot of potential.
in Air Battles, it can be played in 2 main playstyles. It can either be used as a boom and zoom aircraft, where you should be 1-2km above a low energy target, diving on them, shooting then if you missed your opportunity of taking them down, climb back up and try again, or the energy fighting role.
Energy fighting is managing your energy correctly while being agressive with an enemy. You are trying to stay alive, while pushing the enemy into making a mistake, For example you could take them into an energy trap spiral, making them overshoot, making them stall. Energy fighting is quite harder to explain and to successfully play as a playstyle, however it feels most rewarding.
in Ground Battles, the Barougan is okay. you have 38x SNEB rockets, along with 8x T10 rockets, which if used correctly can land you 2-3 ground kills. Due to there being no markers on planes in GRB, you can use this plane in a reverse Boom and Zoom role after you killed ground targets. It implies staying low to the ground, looking up above you for unsuspecting planes. You should be nearly invisible against the ground since there is no marker on you for enemy players to see.
Overall an average jet compared to its competitors, does not shine in any particular area, but it can do alot of things.
Pros and cons
Pros:
- Has stronger landing gear than the Ouragan
- Has a drogue chute for stopping quicker
- Can carry a decent amount of rockets for its BR.
- Good energy retention below 600KM/h
- Is on the faster side of early jets, topping at around 940km/h, putting it close to the F84,
Cons:
- Worse than average roll rate
- Compresses heavily at higher speeds
- 20mm tends to be unreliable, similar to 20mm Hispano MK.V
- Engine can feel underwhelming at times
- Bad performance in vertical manoeuvres
History
The prevalence of makeshift airfields created a need for jet aircraft that could comfortably take off and land on them. The Ouragan, which was relegated to properly developed runways, was selected by Dassault to pursue this need. Serial number 140 was selected to experiment with the use of a new gear that would be able to meet this requirement. Instead of the normal three-wheel landing gear, the plane was fitted with a normal nose gear and four “low pressure” wheels in the center. A tail parachute was also fitted to help reduce the landing distance. The Barougan as it would be called (which stands for battle in Arabic), was able to take off from grass airfields and was a decent competitor to SNCASE’s Barouder. Unfortunately, budget cuts ended the program and the Barougan was reconverted back to its normal Ouragan configuration.
