History

The french plane Dassault Etendard, was designed on an airplane base initially intended for the French Air Force to participate in the competition for the best ground attack hunter capable of operating from artisanal runways.

this device was not retained by nato, preferring the fiat G.91. the French Air Force did not want it and preferred to wait until the end of the development of mirages III.

however, the prototype for the French Air Force caught the attention of the navy, which requested a navalised prototype in 1956.

a new reactor was then added to it : the atar 8 (atar 9 without post combustion) ; an in-flight refueling pole ; new high lift devices ; a new fuselage with a larger wing area ; foldable wing tips ; a new reinforced structure to support catapultages and landings ; and finally, changed the nose cone to put a bigger one, accepting the size of the Aida radar. Therefore, 5 devices were ordered in pre-production by the French Navy in May 1957. On May 21, 1958, at Melun Villaroche, Jean-Marie Saget took charge of the plane. The Etendard flew as fast as the SMB2 while the Etendard had no afterburner.

Its performance and carrying capacity make the Etendard an excellent assault aircraft, also good for a secondary mission : from interception or Dogfight.

Dassault will produce 90 copies in Mérignac without counting the prototypes. from the Etendard IVm n ° 1 to n ° 69, deliveries were made from December 1961 to May 1965.

The Etendard IV M will be gradually withdrawn from service depending on deliveries of Super-Etendard from 1978.
