Description

The Myoko-class, IJN Myoko, 1944 (妙高, namesake: Mount Myōkō) was the lead ship of the four-member Myoko-class heavy cruiser, which was first Japanese vessel exceeding the Washington Naval Treaty limits. She was launched in 1927 and commissioned in 1929. She saw action in several battles during World War II, such as the Battle of the Java Sea, the Battle of Midway, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. In 1944, she suffered severe damage from air strikes and could not return to Japan. She remained in Singapore as a floating anti-aircraft platform with another heavy cruiser, Takao. They both survived the war, but were handed over to the Royal Navy and sunk as target practice in 1946.

She was introduced in Update "Apex Predators". The Myoko is a cruiser with moderate armor and crew, powerful long-range cannons, and two quick floatplanes. She can take some hits, but she is better off fighting from a distance, using her forward turrets and angling her hull to protect herself. She can also capture points and ambush enemies by utilizing her speed and cover, but she has to watch out for her slow turret traverse and weak bridge. She is a versatile ship that can support the friendly fleet in different ways.

The IJN Myoko features respectable armor for a heavy crusier, especially compared to its other 5.7 Japanese counterparts such as the IJN Aoba. The Main belt features 102mm of steel with the bulkheads and ammo elevators being 76mm thick. Contrary to other ships, the Myoko's frontal magazines are only protected by 76mm of steel whilst the rear magazines are protected by 102mm of steel. Both the magazines are housed below the waterline making magazine detonations fairly uncommon unless taking fire from guns larger than 8".

The crew complement of 970 people is respectable but does not allow you to take extensive gunfire, especially from various high explosive shells which pose a great threat to your turrets which are protected by a only 25mm of steel. While your turrets only feature minimal protection they will not be disabled too often unless they take a near or direct hit. The 76mm ammo elevators are a major improvement over other Japanese cruisers and greatly help the ship maintain her rate of fire even under moderate gunfire.

An important part of the ship's armament responsible for air defence. Anti-aircraft armament is defined by the weapon chosen with the control Select anti-aircraft weapons. Talk about the ship's anti-air cannons and machine guns, the number of guns and their positions, their effective range, and about their overall effectiveness – including against surface targets. If there are no anti-aircraft armaments, remove this section.

Additional armament

Usage in battles

Due to the Myoko's moderate crew complement and armor she is able to take some damage when needed. However, as the powerful 203mm cannons provide great long range firepower and the floatplanes limit your rear turrets' ability's to engage targets in front of you, the Myoko excels in long range combat. In order to maximize your protection you can sail the ship away from your enemies utilizing the great firing arcs of your forward turrets to keep all guns on target while being heavily angled. This tactic will also mitigate the fact that your bridge features no armor by making it harder to hit and place your most armored sections of the ship in the line of fire.

It is also viable to utilize the speed of the Myoko to capture points and take an offensive role especially on maps which feature alot of cover enabling you to ambush other cruisers and destroyers. This tactic pairs well with your access to two quick floatplanes enabling you to provide your team with a potentially decisive advantage in tickets. However, captains will need to remain aware of their surroundings if pressing the offensive as the Myoko's main turrets only traverse at 4.0 degrees per second. This is only 1 degree faster than that of many battleships such as the SMS Bayern with many other cruisers featuring traverse rates around 6-8 degrees per second. If you are ambushed by a target with fast firing guns they may be able to disable most of your turrets before you can react leading to your destruction.

Enemies worth noting

  • Brooklyn-class - The ships of this class feature 15 6" guns which can fire HE and HE base fuse ammunition. Their rapid fire rate combine with a large explosive filler can devastate your crew and main turrets. While ships of this class feature shell rooms beneath each turret which can be detonated with your powerful guns; it usually requires multiple detonations to completely sink the ship or finishing off the remaining crew to prevent them from stopping the flooding. When engaging them ensure you actually kill them and did not just temporarily disable them.
  • Porter-class - While the Moffett & class is an easy target to kill especially when aiming for the rear magazines, they can pose a great threat due to her rate of fire and powerful 5" high explosive rounds which can set fires and disable your guns. When engaging Moffetts or other US destroyers range can shift the advantage into your favor by minimizing the accuracy of their gunfire and preventing your turrets from being knocked out. However due to their small size and agility if they choose to take defensive actions it may be difficult to accurately hit them at range and it may be best to utilize smoke and disengage in search of more cooperative targets.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Ten 203 mm guns provided heavy broadside firepower
  • All but the X turret have good firing arc
  • Generally survivable, especially when angled
  • Good top speed for a heavy cruiser
  • Equipped with 16 Long Lance torpedoes for area denial and close range engagements
  • Access to two floatplanes

Cons:

  • Wide hull, somewhat sluggish to manoeuvre
  • Average anti-air defense
  • Fairly weak armour around the frontal magazines, highly vulnerable to shots at the bulkheads
  • The turrets and elevators were poorly-protected
  • X turret's firing arc is obstructed by seaplane catapults, forcing the ship to show the vulnerable sides to use it
  • Long Lance torpedo storage can be detonated and cause severe damage to the ship
