General info
Flight performance
The Saab J-35XS turns very fast, however turning too fast at lower speeds can also lead to a so called "super-stall", which may lead to a crash. Tight turns also lead to a significant loss of energy/speed.

Survivability and armour
Examine the survivability of the aircraft. Note how vulnerable the structure is and how secure the pilot is, whether the fuel tanks are armoured, etc. Describe the armour, if there is any, and also mention the vulnerability of other critical aircraft systems.
Modifications and economy
Armaments
Offensive armament
The Saab J35XS is armed with:
- A choice between two presets:
- 1 x 30 mm Akan m/55 cannon, wing-mounted (120 rpg)
- 1 x 30 mm Akan m/55 cannon + 12 x large calibre countermeasures
Suspended armament
The Saab J35XS can be outfitted with the following ordnance:
- Without Load
- 6 x RB24J (Export AIM-9J) air-to-air missiles
- 76 x 7,5 cm srak m/57B rockets
- 12 x m/56D rockets
- 4 x RB24J air-to-air missiles (Export AIM-9J) + 76 x 7,5 cm srak m/57B rockets
- 4 x RB24J air-to-air missiles (Export AIM-9J) + 12 x m/56D rockets
- 2 x RB24J air-to-air missiles (Export AIM-9J) + 76 x 7,5 cm srak m/57B rockets + 8 x m/56D rockets
Usage in battles
Use the 6 RB24J (Export AIM-9J) air-to-air missiles you have access to by sneaking up on opponents from behind.
Pros and cons
Summarise and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in the bulleted list. Try not to use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - use substitutions with softer forms such as "inadequate" and "effective".
Pros:
- Superior maneuverability at all speeds
- Good energy retention at higher speeds (above 850 km/h)
- High top speed
- Good climb performance
- Good acceleration
- Low stall speed
- Hard-hitting 30 mm cannons
- Good air-to-air missiles
Cons:
- Bleeds energy quickly at lower speeds (below 750 km/h)
- Relatively low maximum fuel load and a fuel thirsty afterburner
- Wings may rip with roll and elevator input at supersonic speeds
- Cannons are placed fairly far from the center (convergence issue)
- Cannons have low velocity and ammo
- All cannon belts lack tracers
- Only has unguided rockets for CAS
- Few countermeasures
- Unstable wing design; if not careful can easily enter an unrecoverable stall or flat spin when maneuvering at low speeds
History
Saab 35S (Sigurd) was a series of export Drakens sold to the Finnish Air Force starting from 1970. S stands for Suomi (Finland in Finnish). In Finland the Saab 35 received the designation DK (for Draken).
The series consisted of 4 versions:
- Saab 35XS – dedicated export version of the Saab 35F for Finland. X stands for export and S for Suomi. 12 copies were built by Saab and assembled under licence by Valmet in Finland.
- Saab 35FS – ex-Swedish J 35F1s sold to Finland. 24 sold and used as fighters.
- Saab 35BS – ex-Swedish J 35Bs sold to Finland. 8 sold and used as advanced trainers, with the exception of one which was used for schooling mechanics.
- Saab 35CS – ex-Swedish Sk 35Cs sold to Finland. 5 sold and used as trainers. Flew unarmed.
In Finnish service the Draken was uniquely outfitted with the Soviet R-13M missile at times. By the mid 1980s the 35FS and 35XS Drakens were upgraded with the same extra pylons as the Swedish J 35J. By 1993 the 35XS also received flare and chaff countermeasures.
