Survivability and armour
Examine the survivability of the aircraft. Note how vulnerable the structure is and how secure the pilot is, whether the fuel tanks are armoured, etc. Describe the armour, if there is any, and also mention the vulnerability of other critical aircraft systems.
Modifications and economy
Armaments
Offensive armament
The Meteor NF.13 (Israel) is armed with:
- 4 x 20 mm Hispano Mk.V cannons, wing-mounted (195 rpg = 780 total)
Usage in battles
Describe the tactics of playing in the aircraft, the features of using aircraft in a team and advice on tactics. Refrain from creating a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but instead, give the reader food for thought. Examine the most dangerous enemies and give recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of the game in different modes (AB, RB, SB).
Pros and cons
Pros:
- Wing-mounted cannons require less precision in order to hit opponents' vehicles than the nose-mounted cannons on the Meteor F.8.
- The cannons are especially powerful considering the Meteor NF.13's high chance of fighting slower propeller aircraft.
- It turns well and has a moderate roll rate, this combined with the wing cannons makes shot placement easier.
- High thrust-to-weight ratio allows for very good climb rate, acceleration and top speed.
- It has a night-fighting radar, useful for detecting opponents' planes through clouds and at night.
Cons:
- It loses a lot of its flight performance at higher altitudes.
- Wing-mounted cannons are ineffective in head-on attacks at over 2km distance.
- High rate of fire of the cannons can drain ammunition quickly if fired in prolonged bursts.
- Some opponents such as the F-series sabre can easily out-speed it both in a straight line and a dive.
- Its jet engines make for poor instruments for sustained turn fights with propeller-driven opponents - use speed to outrun them instead of manoeuvring with them.
History
The Gloster Meteor Nf13 was delivered in 1954, the Nf13 was used as an interceptor with huge sucsess such as in the "Mivvza Kadesh" or operation Kadesh in 1956 or simply as the Sinai war, it was crisis which started with the nationalisation of the suez canal making it imposible to Israeli cargoships to trade and connect with Europe and Africa, In the war French and British authorities called for a de-escalation and bring back the canal to the original owners and they started a military campain against Egypt, Bringing back the Gloster Meteor Nf13 the IDF (Israeli Defence Forces) had been using the Meteor as an interceptor to protect Israeli soil, the only time Israel had achieved a air to air shootdown was on "Operation Tarnegol" in english "Operation Rooster" on the 28th of October 1956, consisted on the assesination of Egyptian Generals (By the MI6 and Mossad). One Meteor night fighter variant departed "Ramat David" an Israeli Air Force base located in Haifa located in the northwest of the country, those Pilots where Yoash Tssidon and his navigator and radar assistant was Elyashiv Brosh, While flying towards the west mediterrean, at 12 nautical miles (300km) from the south of Cyprus, the enemy aircraft was spoted in the radar at 2.6 nm (4,8 km), the aircraft was spoted correctly, the IAF commander Dan Tolkovsky had authorized Tssidon to down the Czech enemy aircraft over the radio, by the time Tolkovsky authorized Tssidon, Tssidon's aircraft was flying at stall speed making it imposible to get an accurate shot and even slipping over the trigger producing jamming one of the cannons loaded with tracers, morever it entered in a left sided stall spin while the Il-14 was moving further away, shortly after Tssidon recovered control and got at the Il-14's tail and intiated the attack, the frist burst dameged the left engine and there was almost no damage whatsoever, had he decided to go on a second pass onto the right engine and this shot was the final one making it to go in a uncontrolable flat spin Tssidon describe it as an "mushroomed to a huge fireball", he dive to 1000ft (300m) to only see the aircraft crashing into the water, shortly after the aircraft landed on Hatzor afb located on the west of Israel (at the south of tel aviv), the operation was a sucsess.
The operation remained classified until 1989, 10 years after the Camp david accords (Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty).
