Mitsubishi
Mitsubishi, originally founded in 1870 as a shipping company by Yataro Iwasaki, evolved into a massive industrial conglomerate, or zaibatsu, encompassing various sectors. While its roots were in shipping and trade, Mitsubishi played a pivotal role in Japan’s military industry, especially during World War II. The Mitsubishi Aircraft Company produced some of Japan’s most iconic aircraft to both the IJA and IJN, such as the A6M "Zero" fighter. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) was also instrumental in providing the IJA with tanks, including models like the I-Go, Ha-Go, Chi-Ha and later developments. Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Company contributed to the IJN, producing warships like the famed Yamato-class battleship Musashi, one of the largest ever constructed.
After World War II, Mitsubishi was broken up during the Allied occupation, but many of its industrial sectors were later reorganized, allowing it to continue contributing to Japan’s defence. MHI became a significant supplier to the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF), producing license-built aircraft for the JASDF like the F-86 "Sabre", F-4 "Phantom II", and F-15 "Eagle". Mitsubishi also developed indigenous designs such as the T-2, F-1, and F-2 "Viper Zero". In the armoured vehicle sector, MHI remains the primary manufacturer of tanks for the JGSDF, providing advanced models like the Type 90 and Type 10. Additionally, the company supplies vessels to the JMSDF, maintaining its strong influence in military production.
Beyond its military contributions, Mitsubishi is integral to Japan’s economy and infrastructure. Key companies under the Mitsubishi Group include Mitsubishi Motors, one of Japan's largest automobile manufacturers; Mitsubishi Electric, which produces electronics and home appliances; and Mitsubishi Corporation, a global trading giant. These companies provide products and services ranging from cars, elevators, and semiconductors to energy solutions, demonstrating Mitsubishi’s continued wide-ranging influence on Japan’s industrial and economic landscape.
