General information

The IJN Suzutsuki (Japanese: 涼月, meaning "Clear Moon") was a Japanese destroyer of the Akizuki class and the third ship of that class. She was laid down on March 15, 1941; launched on March 3, 1942; and commissioned on December 29. Akizuki-class destroyers were designed to provide air defense escorts for aircraft carriers, but they were also equipped with torpedoes and depth charges to combat large ships and submarines.

Starting in January 1943, the Suzutsuki participated in convoy escort duties, though she did not sink any American submarines. In the spring, she took part in preparations for the "I-Go" naval operation by escorting convoys carrying aircrew and heavier ships. The rest of 1943 passed without incident, with the ship continuing to escort various convoys. In early 1944, the ship was hit by two torpedoes from the American submarine USS Sturgeon and struck by lightning on the bridge. The attacks resulted in the loss of 130 lives and severe damage. With the help of other destroyers, Suzutsuki managed to return to port and resumed her role as an escort on August 3. On October 16, the destroyer was attacked again by an American submarine but returned to service in November. In December, the destroyer encountered a storm and sustained further damage. The repairs were not completed until December 27.

In April, Suzutsuki took part in Operation Ten-Go, escorting the battleship Yamato on her final combat mission. On April 7, she was attacked by a Helldiver aircraft and hit by a bomb that severely damaged the deck, turrets #1 and #2, and navigation equipment. Despite this, she managed to return to port, undergo repairs, and resume service, though she was ultimately placed in reserve. Her crew engaged in attacking American aircraft—even shooting down a P-51 in August—and farming. In November, the Suzutsuki was decommissioned from the fleet. In the spring of 1948, her superstructure was dismantled completely, and her hull was sunk at sea to serve as a breakwater.

The IJN Suzutsuki was introduced as a reward for Battle Pass: Season XXIII, "Apollo’s Chariot". This destroyer is equipped with rapid-firing main-caliber guns and powerful 610-mm torpedoes, though her maneuverability is unremarkable.
