Description

Type 8 No.2 is a powerful, decently fast, long-range torpedo, able to take on enemy battleships with ease.

Given that the effective range of the torpedo is as high as 10 kilometers even without the torpedo mode, it's highly recommended to avoid using Torpedo Modification in both: Arcade and Realistic battles. The reach of 10 kilometers is enough to drop torpedoes at an unsuspecting distant target at or near the enemy spawn (usually 12 kilometers away). Adding these 8 kilometers of reach with the torpedo mode increases the travel time at 10 kilometers range from 480 s to 622 s in Arcade (or 514 s to 667 s in Realistic), a 77% increase!

Torpedo mode does have some uses in the Naval Enduring Confrontation mode, primarily against NPC-controlled vessels.

Effective damage

The Type 8 No.2 torpedo carries a 346 kg Shimose warhead, which is equivalent to 380.6 kg TNT. It's large enough to breach pretty much any torpedo bulge.

Comparison with analogues

The Type 8 No.2 is a more conventional torpedo and will pale in comparison to the Type 93 Model 1, Mod 2 (610 mm) & Type 93 Model 3 (610 mm) but will still outshine nearly all the torpedoes of the other nations, featuring an excellent combination of range, speed and explosive filler.

Usage in battles

Having a great combination of range, speed and warhead, the Type 8 is best used without torpedo mode to effectively counter enemy battleships and battlecruisers. Hitting cruisers or destroyers with these torpedoes will typically be lethal with a single hit, either directly, or crippling them by flooding. Much like other torpedoes, it can be effectively used to deny critical passages between the islands.

History

Type 8 No.2 (610 mm) twin-mount on IJN Sendai.

The Type 8 torpedo as a replacement for the Type 6, significantly increasing range, speed, and explosive power, at the expense of overall larger dimensions and mass. The torpedo was designed right after the end of the Great War, as the Japanese designers were seeking to arm their cruisers with torpedoes able to challenge modern battleships. At the time of introduction to service in 1920, it was the heaviest torpedo in the world.

Compared to the Type 8 No. 1, the No.2 variant was propelled by a more powerful compressed-air radial engine manufactured by Schwarzkopf with three modes available: 20 km at 27 knots, 15 km at 32 knots, and 10 km at 38 knots, and the warhead was increased in size by additional 49 kilograms.

It was used on the following torpedo mounts:

Sendai-class used twin-mount 8.8 m x 3.04 m x 1.13 m with a total mass of 8.45 tons. It was loaded manually, but training was done by a 5 hp electric motor, which provided a targeting speed of 6° per second. In case of a failure, a manual crank was provided, with an estimated targeting speed of 4° per second.
Furutaka-class used a Type 12 "side-opening fixed above-water torpedo tube", a 9.11 m x 1.05 m x 1.5 m fixed mount with a total mass of 7.05 tons. It had a unique design, allowing for a reload from the top, rather than from the rear.
