Description

The Whitehead A 110/450 is an Italian torpedo.

Vehicles equipped with this weapon

General info

Being a typical 450 mm WW1 design, the Whitehead A 110/450 struggles in all key characteristics: the size of the warhead, speed, and range. With just 56 km/h for 4 km, it struggles to be anything but an emergency weapon, especially in Realistic Battles, where any ship would have ample of time to outrun or avoid the torpedo before the impact. With Torpedo Mode installed range increases to 6 km at the cost of decreasing speed down to only 47 km/h. It makes it more usable in Arcade Battles, though it's still one of the easier torpedoes to avoid.

Torpedo characteristics
Torpedo Mode Mass (kg) Maximum speed in water (km/h) Travel distance (km) Depth stroke (m) Arming distance (m) Explosive type Explosive mass (kg) TNT equivalent (kg)

Yes 936 47 6 1 50 TNT 110 110

Effective damage

Having only 110 kg warhead, these torpedoes are survivable even by destroyers. More typically, larger targets have to be hit into the ammunition racks in order to ensure sinking.

Comparison with analogues

Compared to the other torpedoes, Whitehead A 110/450 has a rather small explosive filler, with just 110 kg TNT equivalent it's smaller than most of the aerial torpedoes, let alone typical naval torpedoes. Additionally a very short range of just 4 kilometers and a slow speed compared to a majority of the torpedoes in the game.

Nearest 450 mm, WW1-origin torpedoes would be R.G.F. Mark VI** (450 mm), C/06D (450 mm), Type 43 (450 mm), 18 inch Type 38 No.2 B (450 mm) and Pattern 1912 (450 mm), all having about the same characteristics, making different tradeoffs between the speed, range and the size of the explosive fillers.

Usage in battles

The best use case for these torpedoes is to force enemy warships to change their course, which can be highly advantageous under some circumstances. Direct damage is highly dependent on the exact point of impact - while it can destroy early, small destroyers with a single hit, larger ships will require an impact into ammunition storage to achieve effects expected from the torpedoes with a larger diameter.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • It should be able to destroy most of the early destroyers with a single hit
  • It will still push enemy players to maneuver away from the torpedo path, making it a good tool for putting enemy ships in a disadvantageous position

Cons:

  • Small warhead
  • Slow speed
  • Short range

History
