Description

The Type 99 (99式自走155mmりゅう弾砲), nicknamed Long Nose (ロングノーズ) and often abbreviated as 99HSP or SP in JGSDF, is currently one of the 155 mm howitzer in JGSDF service as the direct replacement of the obsolete Type 75 SPH. JGSDF has already planned for a replacement of Type 75 SPH as early as 1985, the development was started in 1987 where Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) would be responsible for the extended hull based on the chassis of what would become Type 89 IFV while JSW (Japan Steel Works) develop the weapon systems with a domestic 155 mm L/52 howitzer. The new SPH was ready for trials in 1996 and tests were done in 1998, where the first four SPH would be delivered to training corps due to the high unit price for complete replacement of all Type 75 SPH and serve alongside with a new, wheeled Type 19 155 mm howitzer.

Introduced in Update "Air Superiority" as the second SPH of JGSDF, Type 99 is equipped with a Japanese equivalent of NATO standard 155 mm howitzer and shares identical shells, the new gun systems retains the relatively fast gun traverse speed and new autoloader for faster reload; meanwhile players have to beware of the underpowered engine and rather huge size - players can easily spot a "lying" Pinocchio from afar.

Instead of opting NATO SPHs, JGSDF issued the plans to develop domestic SPH and Type 99 is the result of this program. The most iconic feature of Type 99 is the rather long 155 mm L/52 howitzer relative to the short chassis based on Type 89 IFV, thus earning its nickname "Long Nose"; this will also be a major factor for enemies to spot Type 99 rather quickly as the overall length including the barrel is at 11.3 m, it cannot move around the battlefield unnoticed unless enemies are too concentrated on a certain area. The overall protection is composed of 20 mm RHA plates both for the chassis and turret, thus any .50 caliber HMG will not have problem gunning down the crews within 300 m, let alone autocannons at even longer ranges, so taking covers and stay behind the line is a good idea to extend its service life. Be extra careful and hide the rear of the turret as the last thing players want to see going off is the 30 shells located right behind the turret, a detonation will certainly set a huge fireworks near its proximity.

As Type 99 has mechanized loader, it also has fewer crew than NATO/Warsaw Pact + PLAGF SPHs at only 4 of them which 3 out of the 4 crews are located on the right hand side of the vehicle (in relative to the vehicle itself); thus tank shots which are aimed for the driver has high likelihood to knockout enough crews and taking out the vehicle once and for all, while shots with explosive fillers will have no problem causing lethal damage to the turret crews once penetrated.

As the hull was developed from Mitsubishi's Type 89 IFV with an extended length, Type 99 retained identical 6SY31WA V8 engine and transmission; while the 50 km/h speed and its 12.1 hp/t ratio might not sound sufficient, at least it still has -30 km/h reverse for a quick retreat.

To follow the mainstream of late-Cold War SPH where NATO countries opted for long barrel, Type 99 is equipped with a domestic 155 mm L/52 howitzer by JSW; the gun system has 30 shells in storage with an autoloader, thanks to this feature, it can achieve shots every 7.5 second, although still not as fast as Bkan 1C at 3.2 second, this is more than enough to handle tanks at its tier which usually takes longer time to reload. The ballistics will be relatively straight thanks to its 940 m/s velocity, making long-range engagements (which it excels in as supporting role) easier; but be sure not to over-extend especially showing the barrel behind cover as this will lead to disablement of the gun and eventually, Type 99 itself.
