Effective damage

The 308 kilogram high explosive warhead is typically able to take down any destroyer and most of the light cruisers in a single hit, if it's done near the ammunition storage. It will struggle, however, against any vessel equipped with a torpedo bulkheads.

Comparison with analogues

Compared to its peers, the Model 1923DT features above-average warhead, while maintaining decent speed at a very good range of 9 km even before the Torpedo Mode is unlocked.

Usage in battles

Describe situations when you would utilise this torpedo in-game (vehicle, pillbox, base, etc)

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Large explosive filler
  • Above-average range while still maintaining average speed

Cons:

  • Speed, while good, even excellent considering the range, remains somewhat lacklustre compared to a more modern equivalents

History

Modèle 1922T tube launching Mle 1923DT off Emile Bertin

The 550 mm torpedo Modèle 1923D and Modèle 1923DT were a further development of the 550 mm Modèle 1919V and featured an impressive performance in range, speed and destructive power. The 415 kg AG 329 warhead had a contact fuse with a 1.5 kg picric acid detonator. The main body contained 195 kg of compressed air at 196 bar pressure and a supply of Schneider alcohol used as a fuel for a 4-cylinder radial engine with two contra-rotating propellers at the aft of the torpedo. At the time of introduction to service, only Japanese Type 8 torpedoes were more massive than the 1923DT.

The torpedo design allowed to have warheads stored separately, in designated steel lockers on the edge of the hull, so that any secondary explosion would be directed outwards, away from the vessel that carried them. The Duguay-Trouin class also had an unique feature where the lockers could be tilted to jettison explosives into the sea in case of a fire.
