Description

The Akizuki-class destroyers (秋月型駆逐艦, Akizuki-gata kuchikukan) were a group of 12 ships out of 39 planned, built for the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. They were initially designed as anti-air, carrier-screening destroyers, equipped with the new Type 98 dual-purpose guns as their main armament. However, the Imperial Japanese Navy General Staff Office modified the design to make them more versatile by adding a quadruple torpedo launcher and depth charges. The class demonstrated to be a very effective multipurpose platform and earned a high reputation in the IJN.
