Description

The SA50 L/57 is a French 75mm anti-tank rifled gun.

Vehicles equipped with this weapon

General info

The 75 mm SA50 L/57 cannon is a performant gun. It comes along with an autoloader (except for the M4A4 (SA50)) which helps reduce the reload time. For much of the BR range within which this cannon is found, it enjoys high degrees of performance. One notable exception to this is the AMX-13 (HOT) which is placed at a higher BR due to its capacity to fire ATGMs.

Comparison with analogues

The SA50 performs nearly identically to the 75 mm KwK 42 upon which it development was based. The SA50 however does not enjoy the same levels of post penetration performance as the German cannon owing to its lack of a shell type round.

Usage in battles

The cannons high degree of penetration allows vehicles equipped with this weapon to attack all but the toughest enemies frontally. Crucially its fast reload speed can be used to offset the low post penetration performance of the AP shell to quickly dispatch targets. Like all autoloading tanks however depletion of the autoloader incurs a harsh reload penalty and such its usage in protracted engagements is not advised.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • High penetration power
  • Assisted by an autoloader (12 rounds), except for the M4A4 SA50
  • High muzzle velocity (1,000 m/s)

Cons:

  • Ammunition lacks explosive filler
  • Limited elevation angle due to the oscillating turret design

History

The 75mm SA50 was developed to fulfill a requirement for a 75mm Anti-tank gun to be mounted on the ARL-44. Although it was never adopted for this role it was later standardized and mounted on AMX-13, among other designs. Development sought a cannon that had comparable performance to the German 75mm KwK 42, notably mounted on the Panther Tank.
