History

The Akan m/40 is the Swedish designation for the 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT.

Sweden faced an emergency when World War II began on September 3rd, 1939. The small neutral country did not have the domestic industry to meet the demands of their air force, but with a global war, most of the other countries were focusing on their own domestic military and not willing to export fighters to Sweden either. Italy was one of the only countries who agreed to deliver aircraft to Sweden, ultimately delivered 72 CR.42bis Falco and 60 Re.2000 which were designated the J11 and J12 respectively (later the Re.2000 would be re-designated the J20). These aircraft, while having minor modifications for the Swedish Air Force, retained the 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns which became the Akan m/40 as the deliveries for these aircraft began in 1940. By 1945, the Italian fighters would be retired and so too would the machine guns that armed them.
