History
After World War II, the Italians were forbidden to have a large navy force by a peace treaty. However, with the growing tensions of what became the Cold War, the treaty restrictions were loosened and the Marina Militare (Military Navy) was formed and Italy became a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). In 1953, the Swedish Bofors L/70 was adopted as the standard NATO anti-aircraft gun and the Italian company Breda got a production license leading to the Breda-Bofors Type 107. In the Marina Militare, the Type 107 mount which is open-topped and had a 32-round auto-magazine was used on among other vessels, the Albatros-class frigate and the modernized versions of the CRDA 60 t torpedo boats. Other anti-aircraft variants were the Type 64, Type 106 and Type 520, and Type 564. The Bofors L/70 continues to see service in the Marina Militare in the DARDO CIWS ("Dart" Close-In Weapon System) which uses a dual mount to counter threats like anti-ship missiles.
