Description

The 57 mm ZIS-2 is a high velocity 57 mm towed anti-tank gun, which served as the basis for the ZIS-4 (57 mm) or the simplified ZIS-4M (57 mm) guns found on some T-34 tanks.

Vehicles equipped with this weapon

General info

The ZiS-2 has an unusually high gun velocity, one that is more akin to late war guns than the early war guns that vehicles equipped with the ZiS-2 will often face up against. This means that the ZiS-2 can often handle uptiers without issues, while its low drop makes aiming for weakspots easy.

Available ammunition

Ammunition

  • BR-271: A high penetration APHEBC round, however low explosive mass may require multiple shots to destroy an enemy vehicle.
  • BR-271K: A high penetration APHE round with marginally more explosive mass than the BR-271, but worse performance against angles and long-distance penetration.
  • O-271: A HE shell useful for lightly armored or open topped vehicles, however due to its low explosive mass it is unlikely to be very useful

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Good rate of fire
  • High penetration for rank
  • Low shell drop

Cons:

  • Low explosive mass

History

Originally created as a standalone anti-tank gun, the ZiS-2 was developed in order to counter the possible threat of German heavy tanks after the Soviet's own use of heavy tanks during the Winter War. However, production initially stopped after only 371 units were built due to the gun's high cost, problematic manufacturing, and reports that the gun would often overpenetrate weakly armored German tanks. This led to the ZiS-2 being abandoned in favor of the ZiS-3 and other cheaper 45 mm guns.

Later in the war however, the arrival of the German Tiger and Panther tanks rendered the ZiS-3 and the other 45mm guns useless, and the higher penetration of the ZiS-2 was once again needed on the frontlines. This led to the ZiS-2 being reentered into service in 1943, with 9,645 units built by the end of the war in 1945. After the war, improvements in tank armor protection quickly phased out the ZiS-2 in favor of more powerful guns, however its small size and weight kept it in use within airborne troops for some time afterwards.

Media

An excellent addition to the article would be a video guide, as well as screenshots from the game and photos.
