History

The European powers in the 1930s saw a sudden rise in military build-up in response to international tensions caused by Germany's re-armament program. To arm their aircraft a number of nations of nations turned to the Belgian company Fabrique Nationale. FN previously worked with Colt Firearms in the US to make the adapt the M1919 Browning from a tank machine gun, to an aircraft machine with a higher rate of fire and lighter construction. While Colt would develop these guns to become an aircraft weapon of the US Army and Navy, FN would take the design and chamber in multiple calibers to export the design for a variety of countries. The Netherlands was among their customers and adopted the Browning in 7.92mm as the M36 Browning. They would use the M36 in a variety of aircraft including the Fokker G.I "Reaper" twin-engine fighters, the Fokker DVIII biplane fighter, the North American 8A-3N ground attack craft, the Fokker C.X scout and light bomber biplane, the Fokker C.V scout aircraft, the Koolhoven F.K.51 artillery spotter and trainer, and the Fokker D.XXI fighters which saw success in both the Dutch and Finnish Air Forces. While the M.36 was originally chambered in 7.92mm, some were instead chamber for a 7.7mm cartridge which was used in the D.XXI and F.K.51. These guns were designated the FN Browning M.36 No.3.
