The 4.7 inch/45 Mk.XII is a 45-calibre, 4.7-inch (120 mm) naval gun which armed the majority of Royal Navy and Commonwealth destroyers during World War II, later being exported to many other countries.

This gun succeeded the similar World War I-era BL 4.7 inch gun, changing the cartridges from BL silk bags to separate QF in brass cases and a new horizontal sliding-block breech mechanism. The Mk XII gun was deployed in twin mountings CP Mk XIX on the Tribal-class destroyers of 1936 as well as the J-class, K-class and N-class of 1938.

The 4.7 inch calibre was finally superseded by the 4.5 inch calibre on the Z-class destroyers in 1943. The new 4.5 inch gun had 55-degree elevation mounts and actually fired a shell slightly heavier than that of 4.7-inch XII guns.

Comparison with analogues

Give a comparative description of cannons/machine guns that have firepower equal to this weapon.

Usage in battles

Describe the cannon/machine gun in the game - its distinctive features, tactics of usage against notable opponents. Please don't write a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but give the reader food for thought.

History

4.7 inch/45 Mk.XII on HMAS Nizam

Examine the history of the creation and combat usage of the weapon in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the weapon and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Weapon-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using , as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />.

Media

Excellent additions to the article would be video guides, screenshots from the game, and photos.
