Description

The PGM-59 class, Kim Qui (HQ 605), is a motor gun boat that is available to players in War Thunder as part of the American naval tree. It was added to the game in Update "Wind of Change" and is classified as a rank III vessel with a battle rating of 3.3 in all game modes (AB/RB/SB).

General info

As a small and agile motor gun boat, the Kim Qui does not have significant armour protection. Its hull is constructed of 8mm steel, while the superstructure is made of 4mm steel. This level of protection offers little resistance to incoming fire and the vessel's survivability is therefore largely dependent on its speed and maneuverability.

The Kim Qui is divided into four sections, including the bow, midsection, engine room, and stern. Each section has its own health pool and can be individually damaged or destroyed. The vessel has a total displacement of 118 tons and is crewed by 17 sailors.

Some ships are fitted with weapons of various calibres. Secondary armaments are defined as weapons chosen with the control Select secondary weapon. Evaluate the secondary armaments and give advice on how to use them. Describe the ammunition available for the secondary armament. Provide recommendations on how to use them and which ammunition to choose. Remember that any anti-air armament, even heavy calibre weapons, belong in the next section. If there is no secondary armament, remove this section.

Anti-aircraft armament

2 х Turret12.7 mm Browning AN-M2 machine gun
Ammunition2000 rounds
Belt capacity200 rounds
Fire rate577 shots/min
Main article: AN-M2 (12.7 mm)

An important part of the ship's armament responsible for air defence. Anti-aircraft armament is defined by the weapon chosen with the control Select anti-aircraft weapons. Talk about the ship's anti-air cannons and machine guns, the number of guns and their positions, their effective range, and about their overall effectiveness – including against surface targets. If there are no anti-aircraft armaments, remove this section.

Usage in battles

Describe the technique of using this ship, the characteristics of her use in a team and tips on strategy. Abstain from writing an entire guide – don't try to provide a single point of view, but give the reader food for thought. Talk about the most dangerous opponents for this vehicle and provide recommendations on fighting them. If necessary, note the specifics of playing with this vehicle in various modes (AB, RB, SB).

Pros and cons

Summarise and briefly evaluate the vehicle in terms of its characteristics and combat effectiveness. Mark its pros and cons in the bulleted list. Try not to use more than 6 points for each of the characteristics. Avoid using categorical definitions such as "bad", "good" and the like - use substitutions with softer forms such as "inadequate" and "effective".

Pros:

  • Has a powerful forward-facing 40 mm gun
  • Has two mounts for dual 20 mm guns

Cons:

  • Blind spot directly forward for 40 mm gun, angling vessel is necessary to fire at short range
  • Shallow draft makes it impossible to consistently hit targets in rough seas
  • Top speed of 32 km/h in RB, will struggle to cross large maps
  • Low crew count of 17 crew members
  • Will face destroyers without enough armament to combat destroyers

History

The PGM-59 class, Kim Qui (HQ 605), is a motor gun boat that was designed and built in the United States in the 1950s. The vessel was initially designed to serve as a coastal patrol and interdiction vessel during the Korean War. Its primary role was to provide close-in gunfire support to troops operating along the coastline of Korea.

The PGM-59 class was based on the earlier PGM-18 class motor gun boats, which were designed during World War II. The PGM-59 class, however, was a much larger vessel, measuring 79 feet in length and weighing 82 tons. The ship was armed with a variety of weapons, including a 40mm Bofors gun, two 20mm Oerlikon guns, and two .50 caliber machine guns. It was also equipped with a radar system and could carry up to 10 depth charges.

The Kim Qui was built in 1953 and saw service during the Korean War. It was used primarily for patrol and interdiction missions along the coast of Korea. The ship's crew was composed of 17 sailors, including a captain, executive officer, and chief petty officer.

After the Korean War, the Kim Qui was transferred to the Republic of Vietnam Navy, where it continued to serve in a patrol and interdiction role. During the Vietnam War, the vessel was used extensively in the Mekong Delta, where it was employed in riverine operations against Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces.

In 1975, following the fall of Saigon, the Kim Qui was captured by North Vietnamese forces and was later returned to the United States as a war prize. The vessel was decommissioned in 1977 and was eventually sold for scrap.

Today, there are no surviving examples of the PGM-59 class motor gun boats, but the Kim Qui lives on in War Thunder as a playable vessel.
