General info

The APX canon de 75mm modéle 1897 is a completely OK cannon which does its job most of the time. It has just enough penetration to kill most things it faces frontally by a few mm's. The explosive filler makes aiming an option when your enemies are light, as any penetrating hit to any internal compartment will overpressure the crew. The reload is rather fast for a 75mm, which makes missing shots due to the poor velocity more forgiving. Side shots will be required for armored tanks such as the M4A3 105, StuH 42 G or Pz.IV G (Though if your tank is tall enough and has enough depression you could just go close to all of them and shoot their roof, just sayin)

Available ammunition

The APX canon de 75mm modéle 1897 has 2 shell types available:

  • The Mle 1916 APHE shell is, along with the HE shell, a stock shell. It penetrates 55mm of armor at a 90° angle from 10 meters away and travels at a velocity of 500m/s right out of the barrel. It has 285 grams of TNT explosive filler, which means you don't need to aim for crew.
  • The Mle 1900 HE shell is a stock shell. It penetrates 11mm of armor at all ranges and at all angles, which is a whopping 1mm more than most 75mm guns! It has 695 grams of TNT explosive filler and travels at a velocity of 500m/s, same as the APHE. It obviously is very useless against most tanks, and should only be used to dispatch pesky open topped vehicles if you somehow don't kill them with your APHE shell. Or planes, if you are feeling adventerous.

Comparison with analogues

The KwK37/StuK37 and 75mm Type 99 cannons are all quite similar. With the Japanese Type 99 having the worst APHE penetration, however it also has the best APHE filler out of the three. The only disadvantage the APX canon de 75mm modéle 1897 has is the lack of HEAT, which all of the previously mentioned similar cannons have access to. With them all having about 2x the penetrative ability of their respective APHE's, with the germans having the best HEAT. However, the APX canon de 75mm modéle 1897 does have the best penetrative power in its APHE, so at least it gets that. However the French and the Japanese stand proud with their high explosive filler, while the puny germans stand at a pathetic 80 grams, absolutely pathetic. Not even as high as the 75mm APX cannon of the SAU 40!

Usage in battles

Describe the cannon/machine gun in the game - its distinctive features, tactics of usage against notable opponents. Please don't write a "guide" - do not impose a single point of view, but give the reader food for thought.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • A lot of Explosive Filler in the APHE for a 75mm, often overpressures the crew from the inside.
  • A rather short reload for the caliber
  • Poor penetration is offset by the fact it faces tanks with equally poor armor (not counting the M4A3 105)

Cons:

  • Poor penetration for the BR (slightly better than the APHE of the 75mm KwK37/StuK37, though)
  • Low velocity makes it hard to aim at far distances
  • No HEAT round for armored targets, unlike similar guns like the German 75mm KwK37/StuK37 or the Japanese 75mm type 99.

History

Examine the history of the creation and combat usage of the weapon in more detail than in the introduction. If the historical reference turns out to be too long, take it to a separate article, taking a link to the article about the weapon and adding a block "/History" (example: https://wiki.warthunder.com/(Weapon-name)/History) and add a link to it here using the main template. Be sure to reference text and sources by using <ref></ref>, as well as adding them at the end of the article with <references />.
