Description

The 120 mm/45 Canet-Schneider-Armstrong mod.1918-19 is a naval gun that was developed by a consortium of French and British manufacturers in the aftermath of World War I. It was designed as an upgrade to the older 120 mm guns that were used on French and British cruisers, and was installed on a number of different classes of warships in both navies.

History

The 120-millimetre/45-calibre Canet-Schneider-Armstrong mod.1918-19 is a dual-mount variant of the Canet-Schneider-Armstrong mod. 1918. The 120 mm calibre was first used by the Regia Marina (Royal Italian Navy) as a coastal weapon before being used to arm their battleships. The Canet-Schneider-Armstrong mod. 1918 was the first gun of this type used by the Italians to arm their smaller auxiliary craft. The following dual-mount mod. 1918-19 was first used on Italy's inter-war scout cruisers that became the Leone-class destroyers RN Leone, RN Pantera, and RN Tigre which were built for colonial service and operated out of the Italian naval base at Massawa, Eritrea. The career of these ships was short with their only notable engagements being shelling British convoy BN-7 off their home port in the Red Sea on October 21, 1940, which only achieved minor damage on the transports, and an attempt to shell the Suez Canal, Egypt in early April 1941. The RN Leone never made it to the Suez, foundering on an uncharted rock on the first day of the operation soon after leaving port and getting destroyed by her sister ships. The RN Pantera and Tigre were attacked by British aircraft and scuttled after the ships made it to shore only a few days later. It was also used to arm the Ethiopia, a colonial ship that was later used by the Italians as a commerce raider in the Indian Ocean after it escaped from her namesake homeport in the Red Sea, and was then used as a convoy escort for Japanese transport submarines until the Italian Armistice in 1943. After surrendering at Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka), it was used by the British in the Indian Ocean. After World War II ended, the ship was turned over to the French who renamed it the Francis Garnier and it continued service until it was sunk during nuclear tests in 1966.
